It sounds like the biggest wave action happened and it doesn't sound like it was a huge issue. Mayor of Tofino says they are waiting/expecting the all clear.

Thankfully Ian Hanimansingh has arrived at the CBC studio to save the day. He's a pro, the other talking heads...

Picking up twitter and facebook feeds from those living in the larger communities closest to the epicentre (Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Port Hardy) it appears there was some minor shaking but nobody's talking about any significant damage. The most interesting news so far is that there's been significant ocean swell of 1.5-3m observed. Basically a small tsunami that should peter out before it hits anywhere big enough for google to mark on a map. Basically, it looks as though unless you have family and friends right at the epicentre (Masset?) or in the coast guard or a houseboat in that area, you don't have to be too worried.

Now, here's hoping that was the quake and not just a foreshock. They're calling it a 7.1 now, which is the same size of the quake that hit Japan 2 days before the 9.0. And since everybody else has been getting 9.0s lately, it seems we're about due over here...

Yes, I know: "about due" in geological terms could mean anytime in the next couple hundred years.

#prayforCanada is trending on twitter. Since "Vancouver" got hit with the earthquake and tsunami, and the hurricane is going to hit "the rest of Canada". People I know online who know I live in Western Canada are wishing me well.

It looks like there is not much damage considering it was a 7.7 quake and the Tsunami looks tame as well. lUcky this time.

Waves between 3 and 7 feet are expected to lash the islands, beginning about 10:28 p.m. local time Saturday (4:28 a.m. Sunday ET), the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

"Basically this tsunami is pointed right at us," said Gerard Fryer, senior geophysicist at the center.

Some people felt this one in Fort St John. I didn't feel anything but this is the 3rd quake in the area in the past week and a half (2nd in 4 days)

Looking like Vancouver (and Hawaii) is safe this time, hopefully that 7.7 was "the big one" everyone has been fearing for decades

My cousin is an important guy in the port of Prince Rupert command centre and gave some Facebook updates. Exciting for a while, then standing down. His family never left their house.

We were on the Kona coast of Hawaii during the Japanese quake. We had to evacuate to higher ground and spent the night sleeping in our car on a hillside with lots of other evacuees. Kona had several millions of dollars of damage from waves and swimming in the ocean was banned for at least 24 hours as the sea oscillated.

I hadn't heard about the other quakes there, but that is a bit worrisome if there has been a recent spike.

I hope this one is as big as they get over there. Glad to hear that it didn't generate too much of a tsunami.

big one will be around 9 and will originate at the water body between victoria and washington state

It's not really a wave per se. The wave of a tsunami is so long and has so much water behind it that it's more like the ocean rising 3-7 feet for 10-20 minutes than it is a normal wave.

In some areas that wouldn't cause a problem, but it would in others. Beaches that have big waves that break at the shore are generally able to handle higher water because land has built up from to the wave action. But in a normally calm bay or a really flat area, a 7 foot rise in sea level could be catastrophic.
