It doesn't look interesting to me without a touch screen.

Used windows ate recently and so far I am not a fan. I get the transition ttha it I offering but it needs a lot of polish and options for the ones who don't want the forced change.

I bought and installed Windows 8 on my Windows 7 machine just now and after about 3 hours of screwing around regret it.

Microsoft has made some very basic things very hard to do (making google your default search engine in place of Bing, installing firefox). Many other problems abound. Have a shaw mail account? Good luck!

Also, even the firefox and chrome browers now run incredibly slow, once you figure out how to install them. Its like going back a decade.

I'm going to slug it through as I see a lot of potential for Windows 8, but right now I'm not so happy being an early adopter.

I had the pre-release installed on a differernt computer, but didn't try to make everything on it work like I actually use my computer, so I shouldn't be surprised now I have problems.

In short, wait. The upgrade has been a difficult experience even for someone who thought they knew what they were getting into.

You are correct. It has the potential but it is wat to difficult to use. With operating systems being so intuitive today you would think itit would be exciting to use but it's annoying difficult to use, like this pos samsung tablet I am trying to use. This has taken 10 mins to f'ing type this.

Yeah, its even worse than I would have thought. I tried to add my music into the OS but with the default windows app you have all this "Xbox Music" crap you don't want and have a hard time finding out how to just play your own music. My solution was to bypass the metro interface and instead use folders. It was literally going back a decade.

I'm not going to try any more tonight and will try some more in the next week to get my computer to work properly again. In the meantime, I was going to buy a Surface right away but forget it, I'm sticking with my ipad.

Windows 8 sucks.

Not sure if this is the problem you're having, but after a quick google search I found this:

Quote:
How do I add music!?

Seems a ridiculously nooby thing to even ask but for the life of me I can't see how!

So, there is the metro music app and WMP in the desktop - the latter being obvious. But how do I add music to the metro app as I can't see any options and simply adding music to the libraries doesn't show up.

The same thing applies to the video and pictures apps I guess...

Any help would be appreciated
Quote:
Anything I've put in my default Music / Video / Pictures libraries in Windows Explorer turn up in the right metro apps.
Quote:
I don't want to put my 60 GB folder into that default Music / Video / Pictures library.

Is there another way?
Quote:
if you right click on the music folder, and hit properties you should be able to add the folder to be included in your music. This does not move the files over just allows the music folder to look in an additional location. I also found that a reboot may be neccessary for the import to start, still testing this though...

Set on upgrading on my dual-monitor Vista *shudder* machine to give Win8 a chance. Don't think I'll ever bother with it on a laptop but having the two monitors should make it easier to handle.

Won't have a chance until tomorrow probably but am excited to try it out. Just looks very smooth overall though there's a lot of legitimate complaints I've been seeing.

Thanks for your help Mike F, but that ultimately didn't solve my issue. I fixed the issue by mapping my music folder as a network drive, which then allowed me to add it to the Music app in Windows 8.

I'm going to spend a couple more hours today trying to get things working. There's so much to potentially like about the metro inerface but for now I'm still quite frustrated and thinking I should have waited.

I have had a large amount if frustration dealing with its performance in VM. Never got around to installing it natively on a machine to get it so I could actually use it.

Will see about getting a non-RC version to install on a machine at work to really put it through the paces.

I'm thinking about installing it as a dual boot beside Windows 7. I found this guide which refers to creating a partition on your hard drive.

Stupid nooby question, but I have a secondary hard drive in my computer already that I used to use for excess storage before I got a 2TB external drive. Should installing Win 8 on the secondary drive work the same as a partition?

Any other problems people foresee?

Not really, windows dual boot is fairly simple, as long as you install the OSes in the order they came out.

That's interesting - I've got it running in a 1 GB single CPU VMware setup on my Macbook and the performance has been stellar - I was quite pleasantly surprised.

What kind of setup are you using for virtualization?

I tried Windows 8 twice under a Virtualbox VM and it was unusable.

None of this post makes any sense to me and I have been running Win 8 for about a week now. You install Firefox and Chrome the exact same way you did in Win 7 - download inside IE10 and run. Next, next, next, finish. To set your default browser, go into the settings of the one you want and click the "make x my default browser" button. Am I missing something?

And your comment about the upgrade being tough is really out there. We have upgraded probably a dozen pc's/laptops at work and 40 minutes later they are back working. This was easily the best upgrade experience from a Windows OS that I have ever seen.

The REAL annoying things I have found so far are the lack of a recently opened file list and it takes like 4 clicks to shut down your computer. Also, you really need to learn the keyboard shortcuts to use this OS efficiently, which seems counter-intuitive to me.

Honestly though, I am starting to like Windows 8 after a week of getting used to it.

Ever since I discovered Launchy the only time I ever use the start menu is to run something the first time so Launchy can discover it, so this might be ok.

Was on VirtualBox, with both 2 and 4GB of RAM. My brief research indicted much if the same, so I didn't press the issue as the 26th was fast approaching and I guessed that the release version would be more stable.

I wonder if its something specific to VirtualBox, since two of you have reported issues now..interesting.

My VirtualBox installation seems to run okay. Haven't spent a huge amount of time with it yet, though.

I like the Metro look but it feels clunky with a mouse.

Took a dive and upgraded my dial monitor Vista desktop to Win8 last night. So far, very impressed with how slick the OS is. Overall just absolutely gorgeous to use.

Problem is, I can really see what a lot of the reviews were saying about Win8 having a split personality and it not being so intuitive to learn. Took me 15 minutes to consistently use the Charm bar properly even though I knew it was in the top left corner (and afterwards, the bottom right). Only once I found the keyboard shortcuts in a random article was I comfortable with the new OS.

Interface is fluid even if loading the apps from the Window store takes longer than I would like. Granted I have an semi old HP tower with only 4GBs but even then the load time is still a little much.

I could go on but those were the main things on my mind, that and the completely weird lack of ability to have two apps going at the same time without restricting one to a mere column.

Oh, and how I can only have the tile UI (still don't understand why Metro was booted.... Still determined to call it as such) on one screen and the Win7 style on the other...

All in all, a beautiful but weird
consumer release on a desktop but looks to have lots of potential for (only?) touch screen.

Final Release of Windows 8 is up on technet, if someone wants to try actual testing. It may have been up before, but I couldn't find it previous to today.
