Over time the NHL is anyway hoping to become a less gate-driven league. This is obvious because there's simply a limit as to how much money you can directly get for people putting butts on seats.

1,000 seats here or there won't be a difference maker with that line of thought, media coverage, merchandising and TV deals are.

Not that the move will necessarily help with any of that of course. But it might.

I have no attachment to the New York Islanders (hated them when they won their cups), and the modern day Islanders are a bit of a joke, so why not rename the franchise to something with Brooklyn in their title, give them some old school uniforms. I like the Brooklyn Bombers myself (I know that there is a baseball connontation), but the Brooklyn Americans works

They're still in New York (actually closer to the city than before) and they will still be on Long Island. Why change the name? Not to mention that the fans seem to want the name to stay.

This would be an awesome idea, presuming it draws enough interest. Would be a unique experience that could draw a different type of fanbase as well...

The seating configuration is just like Seattle used to have when the WHL team played in the old Key arena. It was terrible to both play in and watch. Google image Seattle thunderbirds key arena for images.

Unfortunate for the remaining widdled-down fan base that care about this team on the island.

Interesting how the Rangers and Devils are not pulling out all the stops to prevent this move into their market like the Leafs in southern Ontario. 3 team within 30 km in New York now...sometimes I never understand the NHL

Pictures of both arenas are already in this thread. The setup at Barclays is very different.

Pretty sure the Rangers and Devils can't prevent this even if they wanted to

Once you are allowed in another teams defined area, you can move anywhere within it. It's in the Constitution.

The Islanders should just play at MSG. Split the arena like the Lakers and Clippers.

If the jets and giants can do it, I'm sure the islanders and rangers could do it. The fact they can have a length road trip to NY Philly pit and NJ and not leave their homes would help. But it al doesn't matter now, maybe in 25 years

I believe the Islanders defined area is the whole of Long Island of which Brooklyn is in so there is no need for indemnification.

It might be possible, but with the Knicks, concerts and other events I don't know that it would be so easy to fit another 41+ dates into MSG. There aren't a lot of nights between November and May that nothing is happening there as it is.

Btw, Pittsburgh isn't at all close to the NYC area, it's actually closer to Columbus.

Isn't Staples Centre busier than MSG?

Haha nice, and considering how much they lose these days, it's a natural fit.
