From @SBNation:
Quote:
According to Rule 8, Section 1, Article 8 of the NFL Rule Book (PDF), "[i]t is a foul for illegal touching if a forward pass (legal or illegal), thrown from behind the line of scrimmage ... (b) first touches or is caught by an eligible receiver who has gone out of bounds, either of his own volition or by being legally forced out of bounds, and has re-established himself inbounds."
The announcers thought Williams was allowed to catch it because he had re-established himself in bounds, but as the rule shows, that is not the case. As for those arguing for illegal contact on the Saints for bumping the receiver out of bounds? Rule 12 states that rules governing illegal contact end when the quarterback leaves the pocket.

Good to see the real refs are back so the Pats bench can tell them what calls to make.

woo! game over.
I was just thinking... if the Jets got down to FG range do they go for the win, cause I don't think they could stop the Pats on the next drive.

I'll disagree with that. Besides the playing prevent defense and only blitzing 3 on the Pats last drive of regulation, I thought the Jets defense played that Pats offense incredibly tough. Brady still is struggling against pressure.

Yes, but I think the clock was the bigger issue- assuming the Jets were able to get a field goal in OT, there was a good chance they would be giving the ball back to the Pats with only a few minutes left and possibly not enough time for another possession. If they were 4th down in field goal range with under 4 minutes or so, I think Ryan might have gone for the win (or 1st down I guess)... all hypothetical though.
*Mind you a tie is still theoretically better than a loss.

I believe so. Seems to be that if the ball is tipped, anything goes.
As for rule stupidity, there is a long list of rules that fall in to that category...

You mean like the rule where they suspend a HC for an entire year on what appears to be questionable evidence?

I'm so glad to see Emmanuel Sanders is not seriously hurt after his awesome acting job... He would make a very good soccer player or a Vancouver Canuck.
God, how many more dropped passes is Mike Wallace going to have tonight?

Or how a player can take the field while in the middle of being investigated for taking part in a bounty program
