Why do older Asian people always walk in such a way that it look like they have their hands tied behind their back?

It's like holstering a deadly weapon. If they were out front, you would already be dead.

I would steer away from the laquered or painted ones since you never know if they used lead paint..use natural bamboo ones they are cheap as well.

They also grip better. My chopstick skills are at 2nd degree honky level at best. Those laquered ones I think were just invented to eff with white people.

So I'm in line at Club Monaco with my girlfriend. Dude immediately ahead of us gets to the till. Cashier is female and asian.

Cashier asks "Did anyone help you today" (commission question)
Dude: "Yeah some guy... Asian... round glasses... kinda short-ish..."
Cashier: "Hehe oh, that's so and so..."

Help settle an argument between me and my gf. She thinks it was offensive to use the word "asian" as a way to describe the sales associate's appearance. I think it's fine, but who the hell knows these days.

For the record, the cashier (also Asian) didn't seem to have a problem with it. In fact, I heard her joke about something like "people are afraid to say... blahblah" (filling in the blanks, I'm assuming the next words were 'he's Asian') and both her and the customer chuckled/giggled and seemed friendly.

Thoughts?

How is that offensive?

If there was only one Asian associate out of however many, than that would be the best way to describe the person.

what's the big deal? he didn't use any derogatory terms. as a caucasian, try visiting any foreign country where you're the minority. you become known as "that white guy" pretty quickly

Seems fine to me, not like he referred him as "yellow" or "chink/jap/etc."

No different than saying "European... round glasses" or "Australian... round glasses"

I think it could have been slightly offensive if the only physical characteristic that he noticed about the guy was his race. The fact that he remembered the man's glasses and height makes it perfectly reasonable that he'd also remember that the man was Asian.

In a roundabout way, this reminds me of the time that a cop stopped me as I was walking out of the Chinese supermarket and accused me of bypassing the cash registers. Since he was a white guy who couldn't read my receipt (now that I think about it, the fact that he was white is the only physical characteristic that I remember about him, so I guess by my own definition that's slightly offensive), he asked me to describe the cashier that I had gone to. Now, in no way am I implying that all Asians look alike, but you try giving a description of one of the dozen or so female Chinese cashiers that would give him any useful clue as to who you're talking about. "She's fairly thin and short, has dark hair, glasses, and I couldn't even estimate her age within a decade." Thankfully, he allowed me to walk back into the store to point her out, because otherwise I'd have been headed to jail.
