As far as I remember it has never been the case that they are more docile at any part of the day, they are always active.

Probably because they are hoping the prison has lots of food as well, Rick's station will have very little food if it has any at all. Yes it would be secure, but it's a long way to go for no food.
Also who is to say someone didn't come along and break in and loot everything since he has been gone? It's a long way to go when you are already at the prison which has a secure field to grow crops, a clean water source, and ample room for your group.

I think to do that they'd have to cut through Atlanta/that area, and there is little in the way of supplies.
Also, I can't imagine a rural police station being much more secure than say, a hospital.

for those who haven't read the comics but are curious to what direction they go (no direct plot spoils in this one)
where the show decides to go this season will have a huge impact on whether they can still follow the comic storyline in the future i think. there have been many big changes already, but they've still managed to follow the same general story for Rick, his family and the core group. now they have to decide if they want to continue that and have the TV series take some incredibly dark turns, or if they're going to break away from the comic completely

my pipe is plenty big enough (cough) but seeing a gif that large just GMG. they're not that difficult to optimize. it's like when someone at work spam emails a bitmap image instead of a .jpeg, there's just no need
