I collect a lot of things... but only dabble in watches. Here is my current every day watch:

The thing about watches is that they are more and more superfluous as devices of telling time, which makes it more and more obvious that they're really just jewelry for men. Either way, there's lots of nice jewelry in this thread. I find it kind of interesting to peruse as well though I'm more interested in mountain bikes, motorcycles or wine as luxury purchases. To each their own. It's nice to have something you enjoy.

Well yeah, of course it's man jewelry, and I don't think anyone here is claiming them to be some integral tool of life. But hey, some of us love watches because they are amazing little pieces of engineered technology. We appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that you don't really see much of anymore.

At the end of the day, we just don't need some moron coming in here every 10 posts claiming how his plastic walmart special or his phone tells wicked time and we are all fools.

Is there any place in Calgary to get some new spring pins that attach the band to the watch? After trying to swap out from some old watches it looks like there are compatibility issues.

I am a bit embarrassed about taking a fake Rado to a watch shop though.

AND SO YOU SHOULD B-... just kidding. I'm not going to be that guy. Just go to a mall kiosk that does watch batteries and things. They usually sell spring bars and split pins for watch straps.

The title is "watches you wear..."so I told the watch I wear and that it works fine for me. I have looked through and admit that some of them are gorgeous works of art with incredible attention to detail.

I try to live a simple life and to me almost all of the watches (except for the calculator watch ) are beyond extravagant and a waste of money. That's not to say that some people don't enjoy them like a fine wine and if that's the case I don't have an issue with it. If that's what floats your boat get 10 of them!

You really shouldn't feel embarrassed. 95% of rolex watches seen at watch repair shops are imitations. I would say about 75% of what you see on the street for Cartiers are fake, and about 50-60% of Rados. Breitlings are also commonly imitated. Fake Rados are really popular in the mid east. What really gets me though, is that you can get some fakes that are REALLY good. Its hard to break it to people when they get an imitation watch that they think is an original for birthday or as gifts.

I currently have a 8 year old Kenneth Cole watch, but I've been itching for a new watch. I was at Chinook yesterday and tried on a Tag Aqua Racer ($1800) and the Carrera ($2700) at Birks.

He was going to give me 10% off plus a free battery replacement/service for free.

Are these standard prices or are they marked up from the US prices?

Would google around. Watches are hard to predict in price. Certain brands will see heavy discounts and sales. Other brands rarely go on sale.

As for the USA/Canada thing, I'd almost guarantee Canadians are getting f-ed over for no reason on watch prices, like all consumer goods.

I would check out JVair. I have seen their Tags go on sale @ 20-30% off.

I've found Birks to be less willing to negotiate on their watches.

I've been eying this watch for about 2 years and finally picked it up today. My first "fancy" watch.
The first time I've actually seen the colour combo I wanted in stock at a retailer, and negotiated a price I am very happy with.

so i'm looking for a new watch, but having a hard time finding something i really like. my main issue with most of what i find is that they're just too bulky. i like having a light, thin watch on my hand that i forget i'm even wearing rather than something that i can always feel and gets in the way if i'm typing on a keyboard or something. any recommendations? my price range would be around the $500 or lower mark

I hear you about the size. Way too many gigantor watches these days, and most of them are kind of hideous. It's a trend that hopefully will reverse sooner rather than later.

The best watch under $500 in my opinion is a Seiko (they are often the best watch over $500 too!). It's easily the best bang for your buck watch brand.

Unfortunately the best Seikos tend not to make it to this part of the world, but there are some good places to get them online. My favorite is SeiyaJapan, as they have nice listing of some of the watches we can't get here (but they will ship to Canada). They are mechanical, and hover around your budget.

my current watch is a Seiko, and while i like it it's still a bit on the heavy side. my favorite watch i've owned was actually a Timex that had an aluminum casing and wrist band. i often went to bed with it still on because i completely forgot i was wearing it, such a great watch

I've been tossing around the idea of getting into the "fancy" watch game and was perusing a lot of watch stores in the US last week. A number of sales people I talked to figured this trend was on the way out rather soon. Which is good, because I have girly little wrists.
