brokerage fees are BRUTAL!!!!
i bought a camera lens from the states and the stupid brokerage fees were around $300 - a total joke!!
the sad thing is that it was still cheaper to buy it from the states and get it shipped to me... even after the initial cost of the lens, the exchange rate, the shipping, the brokerage fees, gst AND pst - i still saved a crapload of $$... why do things cost soooooooo much less to buy in the states?
i just bought a bunch of truck parts from the states and my wife and i are heading to oroville (in washington) tomorrow morning to pick them up. (there is a company in oroville that you ship stuff to, they receive it, give you a call and then you go pick it up... $3/box... pretty hard to beat that!) the truck parts are at least 25% cheaper in the states and with the dollar being a little above par it's hard to resist the deals
4x4 - i would imagine if you shipped it to someone and then they shipped it to you that you'd still get nailed with the extra fees.... about the only way around it would be to go to the states and pick it up

Those flares are 75% cheaper in the states. Damn things are like $119 each in Canada. These are $100 for all four. So even for $258 I'm still way ahead, but what a downer to find it so cheap and then get it jacked up like that. Sort of like seeing a seat sale and then the airport fees get it right back up into the "not really necessary" realm.

UPS is fataing horrible for brokerage fees. My pops just paid $28 in fees on a $25 item. On top of shipping.
From what I understand, they "loan" you money to cover the brokerage fees at the border, then rape you for the fees plus interest.
I use Montanna Shipping Outlet a lot. They're awesome and it's always a good road trip. If you save more than it costs you in gas to get there and back, you win! Just be warned with the new higher limits for duty-free, they're charging duty when you're over more often than they ever used to.
I usually make a few orders at once to make the road trip worth while.

On the Montana Shipping Outlet thing I just picked up some tires from Tirerack and some stuff from Amazon.
Tires would have been $330 each here but were $170 each on tirerack. I paid about $40 to MSO and another $45 at the border and away I went. We went camping around Kalispell so it was a good overall experience.
The one downside is that the RV cover I ordered sat in Illinois for three days so did not arrive, until the next day, of course. Now I need to get it shipped up here for $80. MSO will only forward with UPS, which is a bummer.

Keep in mind that GST/HST gets charged in addition to that, so for a $100 item it'll be about $34 in brokerage and taxes ($29 brokerage and $5 GST). So if the item and shipping totals $258 you're looking at a little under $300 total.

One thing to keep in mind is that UPS's "premium" services include brokerage. So depending on what you're ordering, it is often cheaper to pay more up front for shipping and get free brokerage.
And Ken0042, I can't thank you enough for the link to that Montana shipping place. My dream of a cast iron chiminea may become reality after all.

I used to be a regular Montana Shipping customer when I lived in Cranbrook.
Very nice people for Republicans, very reasonable prices, and it was only about an hour and a half or so to get from Cranbrook to Eureka.
I definitely recommend them.

Anyone have a good recommendation for cat litter brands?
The one my wife usually gets works well for the cat, but the dust it produces drives my nose and lungs nut every time she goes scratching in it.

Most cats are like this, and it has less to do with being picky and more to do with being thrown off by the familiar smell of their litter box.

We've probably changed her litter three or four times with different brands and haven't had that problem yet. She used to be a street cat, so maybe she's just not picky what litter she has. I suppose I'm more the picky one as litter dust really bothers me.
There are just so many different brands and kinds of litter with so many advantages and disadvantages and speculation and all I want is to stop coughing.

Is the litter box open style or covered? Perhaps the closed style with a door will help keep the dust from getting around.
