"You don't want to get slow, you know?" Calgary Flames prospect Sven Baertschi said after his first on-ice session at the Abbotsford Heat training camp. "You have to make sure you're working on everything; speed, skill. All of that."
Getting bigger and stronger was Baertschi's top priority this summer - he put on close to 10 pounds over the course of the off-season - but he didn't neglect other aspects of his training regimen to spend hours lifting weights.
I actually agree with his points. Sven spending some tine in the AHL would help him out a lot. Playing for a guy like Troy Ward and getting top 2 line minuets (He wouldn't get those minuets in Calgary with the veterans ahead of him). It would be useful for him to use the lock out time to develop making him even more NHL ready. Not sure if he's serious about the lockout comment. For his sake i hope he's joking.

Still, half a year / a full year of playing for the Heat, whatever it turns out to be, is not going to hurt him. It will, in fact, probably help him more than if he ended up here in Calgary right off the bat. There have been very few players that could jump right into the NHL at the age of 19 and play on a regular basis, and still be effective.
He'll learn a lot playing under Ward. I think its a good thing.
I'm at the AESC right now watching training camp. Sven looks really good. The kid doesn't give. He's laying on his stomach from a hit and he still maintains control and gets a pass off the Horak.
Ward was also using him to demonstrate drills. I can't believe he can get the pass off sometimes.

That remains to be seen. Brent Sutter was supposed to be the savior that we were all waiting for and he acted it too. Never had the results to back it up, though.

When sutter started, the organization didn't have these level of prospects that we finally have now. so chances are... fingers crossed.... that whenever the lockout ends... the kids will be making their way up to the big show in no time and getting fair looks at working their way up the line up and into key situations
I was more impressed by the assist. what vision. He totally sold the goalie on shot and even though the pass skipped and Street didnt get all of it he was still able to flutter it into a yawning cage!
! Bartschi was the only reason I was excited for next season.
