Default Highway 1 east - WTF?

so i'm attempting my morning commute from Chestermere today but i can't even get on the exit ramp to highway 1 because traffic is backed all the way up to the town's main street and is at a standstill (same with 17th ave). anyone know what the hell is going on? in the 6 years that i've lived here, i've never seen anything like this, even considering it's the first real snowfall of the year. i tried searching for possible accidents or road closures, but can't find anything

at least this gives me an excuse to work from home this morning, no way in hell i'm going to sit in traffic for 2 hours just to get into the city

It's Stage 1 of the city's plan to piss off the parasite communities.

Stays the guy that lives in McKenzie Towne.

It is a pure sheet of ice, only people with 4x4 were getting anywhere.

I was still sliding quite a bit... pretty decent tires as well.

Wow, with a back up like that, it's likely to take you twice as much time to get to downtown from Chestermere.....so like 30 minutes right?

I seriously thought about driving in the ditch the whole way, it would have been safer.

I really didn't think it was that bad this morning.

I was on Deerfoot from 7 to about 7:25; which isn't a heck of longer than normal.

Was nice steady, safe pace IMHO.

The curve heading out of Chestermere was terrible, just a pure sheet of ice right up until 84th street.

The minute a commute is between two towns, it's too long for me! And ice on the roads just seals the deal.

you realize that Chestermere is closer to downtown than a community like Midnapore right? my daily commute with moderate traffic is 25 minutes from the time i get in my car to the time i park it downtown. with heavy traffic it can be 35-40 minutes

Looks like you've figured out a good commute plan then. Still too long for me though, unless it involves cycling or walking. Then again I prefer inner city living. 10 minutes commute tops is about all I can handle or willing to do.

HWY 1 west of 68 street was fine.

but it is the provincial contractors that are responsible for HWY 1 east of 68 street: carmacs plows 68 street to Garden Road and Volker stevine plows east of Garden road.

was privitization such a great idea?

We will post some pictures of the sun in January and February, because by then I'm sure you will have forgotten what it looks like. The most depressing, grey, socked in winter in western Canada.

Privatization isn't the problem. The problem is wet icy stuff falling from the sky. That section is prone to drifting, too, which can make plowing much less effective, as snow keeps piling up in certain spots very shortly after being plowed.

Also, plows are better at removing snow than ice. A thin layer of ice can be very hard to remove, especially when it's still coming down.
