Right now it seems to just come down to preference, over a clear and distinct winner.

I don't think that we'll ever see a clear winner from here on. All phones have the basics covered (if Apple fixes its maps)...everything else is bigger, smaller, thinner, lighter, faster, cool new frill, etc. It's hard to imagine a breakthrough that will wow us all (though I guess that's why they call them breakthroughs).

I don't know if Google glasses are the next big thing i.e. new platform but that's the kind of revolutionary thing that breaks the phone wars logjam.

There will always be breakthroughs. There was a time when camera and video functions were added to goofy looking flip phones, ten-ish years ago, and people went "Wow, phones can officially do everything!"

Granted, it was mostly the older generations who said that, but still, the point is it always looks like they've covered it all in phones, until the next thing happens and everyone goes "wow, this is the future of phones".

Yeah, when cell phones were just phones, I had little interest in them. Hell, that might be the least used part of my "phone". I wonder what the next big use of it will be. I really love the virtual wallet part that is emerging. The ability to have all my "cards" in my phone is getting very cool.

I would love to be able to pull up a "Safeway" card and scan my Airmiles and Club card on my phone instead of fiddling for my wallet for both of those

You don't need to bring your Safeway card, just tell them your phone number.
Air Miles has an app, that when you tilt sideways, gives your full card number. There's also a message that scanning is coming "soon."

If you wanna see some really cool payments tech, check out Square Wallet (headed to Starbucks in the US this November) which lets you pay with your name.

Seems like the phone is unnecessary in the transaction, then.

Google has been working on its Wallet which uses NFC. It's not without its glitches this early in the game.

Yeah, I'd rather hand over a card if I'm already handing over the airmiles. Easier for the person behind the till too.

Apparently last year Apple and Google both spent more on litigation and patents than actually developing and creating new products. No matter which side you are on on the debate, as a consumer this isn't good for the long term innovation of these companies.
http://9to5mac.com/2012/10/07/last-y...-new-products/
In other news about the last patent case, more evidence is emerging accusing the Jury foreman of lying about his patent history. Aside from tainting the Jury with his own perceived notions as a patent owner, he was also sued for patent infringement himself for violations with a number of Seagate patents. Despite specific questions requiring jurors to disclose past patent litigation history, he never mentioned he was ever sued in that case. Given Samsung is a major shareholder of Seagate, this and other prior evidence raise very legitimate questions about his bias as a foreman and unfair influence on the jury.

The phone is very necessary - it acts as a kind of virtual tab, with a link between your credit card and the cashier's till. And it ensures that you're actually in the store.

Square Wallet is different from other mobile payment tech because it doesn't need readers or barcodes. You can even set it up for hands-free checkout, where your name becomes available for the cashier as soon as you're within 100m. (or if that seems unsecure, you can open the app up while waiting in line, and indicate you're ready to pay - the key point being you never have to hand over, or scan your phone.)

I doubt that. It's much more apparent that you and other Android users are frustrated that Apple can release a feature like pano years after other devices have had it, and still make billions. That's me being smug.

The constant truth that fandroids fail to realize is that people trust Apple to make things they'll understand - and it literally has no barring whether they brought it to market first.

I've never owned any apple products (still don't, personally) so I stayed away from the flame wars. However, after fooling around with the iPad I'm coming to the conclusion that:
1. on Android/Windows products you can do practically anything you want, however it rarely works 100%

2. on apple products you are VERY limited to what you can do, but what you can do, works 100%

Combine these two and you have a winner. I know, easy

My wife has the RAZR MAXX and it is pretty impressive. The upcoming RAZR HD MAXX should be more so. If they released a Droid RAZR HD MAXX NEXUS, I'd possibly be willing to pay full retail for it.
