It's like Taco Tuesday everyday at my house.

(That and I have no idea how long it lasts. I assume since neither of my kids seem to grasp the concept of actually using it, it probably lasts a lot longer than I think.)

That's a myth. Superstore isn't going to raise their prices due to theft since their prices are set based upon maximizing profit while staying competitive with other grocery stores. What you are doing is taking money out of Galen Weston and the other billionaires in his family.

What about the manager whose bonus is based on the inventory and is reduced by 10 cents for every dollar in inventory that goes missing. When you steal a dollar you are stealing $0.90 from Galen and $0.10 from management.

If you are trying to maximize profits while staying competitive, how could adding the additional cost of stolen merchandise not push prices up?

There is a cost to running the store - facility expenses, staffing, stock, etc - that needs to be offset before a profit can be realized. If that cost is increased, due to theft (or any other reason), then the profit is reduced. If you reduce profit enough, then it doesn't make sense to even be in business, since your margins will be higher investing somewhere else.

So steal from Superstore but not from Co-op?

You think of Walmart has a chance to further drop prices in order to undercut their competition they won't do it?

Low volume items have crazy markups and your logic likely applies, but groceries are a different ball game.

Most likely, Superstore builds in a shrink provision into their financial statements that account for theft. So prices probably wouldn't go up or down because of theft. The ones that get impacted would usually be store managers and staff (if they get bonuses for reduced shrink) and the loss prevention department bonuses (if they have one and are based on performance).

But at the end of the day, theft is still theft. It doesn't matter if you're stealing from the average Joe or from Warren Buffet. Just because the latter has a lot more money doesn't make it less wrong.

I guess you could say that just because there is a budget line for the losses; it doesn't justify theft. As well, if the level of thefts increase; the store or company will take action. For example; if they planned for $1M in theft and there is $2M in the same time period- something has to give. They either raise prices, take money from somewhere else, or take away the source of the increased losses. (Such as WalMart did by taking away their self serve checkouts.)

i am thinking that overall theft is down at superstore becuase they have moved the mens razors and cartridges (it is my understanding that these are loss leaders) from behind a counter to back out where you can pick them yourself.

did walmart remove the self-serve cash registers because of losses, or perceived lack of customer service?

I am sure I read that it was loss driven.

I always wonder about people who feel that petty theft is an acceptable way of shopping...

Is there a particular line that they won't cross re dollar amount? ... or is it anything goes if you think you can get away with it?

Perhaps Pacem, or all the other confessed thieves on here, can answer this?

They are the same people that think it is OK to tell you insurance company the fake Oakleys that were stolen, were real. Any the same type of people that increase the size of their TV when making a claim.

When I spoke to a manager right when they took out the self checkouts- he told me that the amount of shoplifting went up significantly.

But there is NO way that leads to higher insurance premiums... you're just taking profit away from a faceless corporation who's out to screw the little guy. Stick it to them!

And the same people that illegally download or stream music/movies/tv shows/books, purchase counterfeit jerseys and don't disclose 100% of the tips they earn while serving.
