I am going to a destination wedding this Winter in Mexico. My brother will be getting married and has requested only our presence as a present.
However, now I am hearing that other attendees are planning to bring gifts. Is this because their presence isn't as welcome as mine or am I being cheap.

I think it all boils down to everyone not wanting to look cheap. As soon as one jerk breaks the rules and brings gifts, everyone else will feel compelled.
IMO it boils down to your brother. Did he say no gifts but is secretly expecting gifts and he only said that to be polite? Or does he truly not want a gift because you're forking out a grand or two to attend his wedding?
If I was you I'd only buy a gift if you want to and can afford it.

It's your brother so different rules apply opposed to if it was a buddy or a cousin.
Think about if the roles were reversed. You may say no gift required but you wouldn't turn it away if you got one would you?

They're not actually 'bringing' them are they?
When I went to Cuba some people had a destination wedding and the morons actually brought all the gifts with them.
Hey, if you're cool with getting lubed up by customs getting there and getting back, then by all means.

That is a good point. It may be best to bring down something large and fragile. I only have to worry about getting it down there. Then it is their problem.
I don't know if they are being brought down but wouldn't think so. Maybe I will just get him cash for a dinner in town post wedding.

There is a vietnamese sub place on the East side of Chinatown across from the Harry Hays building.
Does anybody know when it closes tonight?

And if your brother says 'no gifts' I'd take it at face value.
I learned pretty quickly that if you dont like playing the family social games then just take them at face value and they'll eventually learn to just tell you what they mean.

We went to my nephew's destination wedding three years ago in Mexico. I dislike destination weddings so have a bias, but we were told no gifts. Sorry, but if you say no gifts and it costs us $5,000 for two weeks (yes, we chose to extend to another week) then no gift it is. If you want to stock your house with toasters, irons, towels, kitchen stuff and bed linens, then have a local wedding and I'll buy you a really nice gift. /rant*
*We had a great time hanging out with the folks, so I'm not sorry we went.

The legal requirement for car seats need to be installed according to the manufacturers specifications. This differs depending on the model.
Any kid under a year, or a certain weight, needs to be in a rear facing model.
edit:
from: http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/4922.asp
Quote:
It is safest for a baby to stay rear-facing until at least 1 year old, at least 22 lbs (10 kg) and walking.

Keep your child in a forward facing seat correct for his height and weight until he is at least 40 lbs (18 kg) or until he is at least 6 years old.

What happens if I've renewed my drivers licence and still have not received it in the mail after about 5-6 weeks? Do I have to fork out another 60 bucks?

Depends on your lens. Anywhere between f/1.4 - f/4 will accomplish what you need, the larger the aperture (smaller f/stop number) the more blur.
