An episode spent tracking down the uncle would have led to some character development. Right now I really don't care about any of the characters. And it wouldn't have had to be them going from place to place; there could have been a sub-story in there too.
Everything so far just seems either too convenient, or simply not realistic. This week's flashbacks show the guys having left the military base where they were stationed within 6 months. I would think that the military would have kept together; they had the weapons and the means to be the local authority. To me that is the logical way they become the militia; protecting the nearest town and farming communities- and rising to power. Instead we have these 3 guys out for a walk; and they end up becoming one of the largest miltias in the US?

Miles seems to be a big Stephen King fan since he referenced both The Stand and Shawshank in the last episode.

As for finding Miles right away, do you really want to waste an episode with the niece walking into shop after shop going, "Do you know Miles? No? OK." "Do you know Miles? No? OK." "Do you know Miles? No? OK." "Do you know Miles? A couple of streets over? OK." "Do you know Miles? A couple of streets the other way? OK."
Other shows may spend a season tracking down the uncle if that's the story they want to tell. Revolution obviously Revolution doesn't want to tell that story. They don't do it because they sit down in the writing room and realize "Damn, realistically it would actually be a long walk so we better put off the story we had in mind and spend the time detailing the characters trek from A to B, where our story starts."
|
Obviously not, but they keep making giant leaps in the story, ignoring major things and it still doesn't feel like they are at the 'story they want to tell'.
That really is the big problem for me with this. 3 Episodes in and I only have a small idea what story they are trying to tell, and I am the perfect audience for this type of show. Normally I eat this stuff up like a dog chowing down on his own turd, oblivious to how bad it really is.

unless its one of those filming mistakes you see sometimes, the angle immediately after that scene they had crossbows, I remember because I thought the same thing, unless they were different people they showed

Maybe it was different people. The 4 people in that screen grab are holding "assult rifles" (generic term).

Had an idea!

I think like Terra Nova they bit off more than they could chew as a show. I suppose if you actually had half decent actors it might be better. Right now it sucks.
I'll keep watching just to see what happens, but I imagine it doesn't last long.

And they say NBC doesn't have any good comedies anymore.
And I was tricked! The main "hot" chick isn't hot enough to continue watching this crap.

Everything I've learned about guns has come from video games, but I'm pretty sure they're holding UMP-45 submachine guns, minus the foregrip and with some type of holo sights. The clip and butt look pretty much the same, and especially the muzzle.

Well, I decided to watch last night's episode. I was bored on the bus and I have the CityTV app. It was actually good; good enough that I wanted to finish watching it over lunch instead of waiting for the ride home. A couple of flashbacks that explain a few things, both from a personal timeline perspective and a technological perspective.
I think next week I will actually record it in HD; which is saying a lot. My PVR is full so HD space is at a premium.

I agree it is getting better. It seems the network agrees as well since Revolution has been picked up for the full season.
There was a lot of complaints about the story going too fast yet there was a lot of nitpicking about things that have not been shown or explained yet. The flashbacks are slowly doing a good job of tying things together.
I'll give it to the end of the season and see how I feel.

In response to SilverGS's spoiler:
Also- what do you guys think about using spoiler tags? Is there anybody still interested enough in the show that hasn't seen last night's episode? I ask because I know they can kill the flow of the thread, and this thread needs as much help as it can get.

I thought last night's episode was the best yet. Screw spoiler tags. I'm glad the British chick bit it. She was just out of place (of course, that was part of the background for the character...).
I was a little worried about the flashbacks, but I think I can handle them if they are used to reveal bits of the story, rather than just some character development fluff (a la LOST).

The thing with the Flashbacks is that it just reminds me more and more like Lost. The use of flashbacks and the music they use to build suspense is the same. Not that I am complaining, I loved Lost.

I don't mind them so much; especially since there is a story that was not told. The blackout happened, now we are 15 years into the future. It also explains why the British chick only had the pictures on her iPhone- she was here on a business trip. I also think they did a good job of finding a younger version of Charlie.

Me, too, especially since she can act better than the grown up Charlie!

She walked to the east coast in hopes of getting on a ship to London but was told she was too late. There used to be ships that could take people across but are now either destroyed for resources or under the control of the militia.
All I was getting at is that the steam power question has been answered. I had a lot of questions after the first show as well but it seems we just need to be patient and things are being revealed episode by episode in terms of what tech remains and how they envision life after this event.
I agree the first episode moved really fast but it seems they have chosen the flashback method to help with the character development so again have to be patient. It is risky since they very well could loose a lot of potential viewers who don't have the patience to let things build up.

This show might be worse than Terra Nova.
And that is saying something.
