Wow, that is very cool. Good for him.

I just got back from meetings back east with a very french Canadian company and I kept wishing I had a better handle on the language. It makes everything so much easier.

Haha! I actually speak fluent French but I had some new clients from a very remote area in Quebec, like you said, very french Canadians. I couldnt understand a word. It was like pidgin french.

Wouldn't be suprised if he had some form of Autism. Isn't that usually the case with these kind of special talents?

They're also called "European" sometimes. Whatever that is.

A bit OT but I had the same experience in a high school exchange program. I was sent to a host family in a more rural area of Quebec and had alot of trouble understanding. Some of the slang in particular was very difficult to figure out.

Sounds like a few Newfies that I worked with when I was in the Coast Guard on the east coast.
You knew they were speaking English, but I was f'ked in trying to understand them.

These guys came from totally isolated fishing villages where the only way in and out was by boat.

Very impressive. The part that amazes me is that he knows very different languages. Before I started the video, I expected that they were going to be largely related languages.

I speak English and Ukrainian. I've also picked up a little bit of French and Spanish from travelling. Not enough to hold a conversation, but enough to order food & drink and get the gist of what people are talking about in many cases. I figure with a bit of effort, I would be able to learn a fair number of European languages given the base that I already have. It is the Asian and African languages that are so ridiculously foreign to me. Given his diverse base of languages, it will be pretty easy for him to double that number. This will take him much less time than it took him to get to this point.

He is clearly not learning languages just to have a large number of numbers in which he is fluent. He could easily add related languages such as Spanish or Polish, but instead he is learning unique languages from all over the world.

I think you're thinking of Savantism. Savants are very gifted with their memory, but about half also suffer from Autism. Only about 10% of autistic people are also savants. Most are unfortunately, are just disabled.

I'm shocked at how good his Mandarin was. It's all about tones, which is tough to master, but he seemed to have it down packed.

Was it mind bottling how packed down it was?

That's awesome! His Arabic was excellent, although he did mix some Iraqi Arabic in with his mostly Egyptian dialect (very different dialects).

Mandarin is easy, well easier. Only 4 tones. If he can master Cantonese that would be flipping impressive. 8 tones! One of the hardest languages to speak.
