Among the questions being asked:
  • How much alcohol do you consume in a week?
  • Have you ever solicited the services of a prostitute?
  • Do you or your spouse/common law partner or cohabiter gamble (including lottery, casinos, online gaming, scratch tickets, etc.)?
  • Have you ever committed an act of domestic abuse, including the use of, or the threat of use of, violence against your spouse, partner, parents, children, siblings, pets, etc.?

Makes sense to me, as the attorney in the article points out this isn't a typical job.

I have no issues with this.

The first thing that popped into my mind, before I even read the article, was these are people you want to ensure don't fall under the influence of someone else due to gambling or drug debt.

Of course, I just finished watching the first 3 episodes of the Mob Doctor last night, so I might be a little off base with reality on this.

Say you go and plow a prostitute and someone, say a criminal learns about your weekly plow sessions. That individual might use this as blackmail to help them import certain items into Canada.

I'm sure the theory is that patronizing prostitutes could put you in contact with human traffickers, and that you might be more likely to help them get sex slaves from Asia or Eastern Europe into the country. I assume that a "yes" answer just leads to some follow up questions and that you aren't automatically disqualified if you admit that you gave a girl a hundred bucks for a bj one time at your buddy's bachelor party.

I would assume anything you do can be used as leverage against you.

Sounds fair but it's nothing compared to a polygraph at the Top Secret clearance level. That got pretty personal with the type of questions they asked

Given their roles in safe-guarding the borders it's completely reasonable, as these questions dig into the character of people and provide insight into what they might do in certain situations given what they have already done in the past.

As part of Top Secret level clearance, the questions go even deeper and you're forced to answer while wired to a polygraph. Again, completely reasonable given the information that is shared with you once you obtain that level of clearance. On top of that, you have to re-qualify for this clearance by going through another interview with the same kinds of questions regularly to ensure you still qualify.

Not sure what level clearance CBSA officers have to clear though. I'm assuming Secret?

And yet, the long form census and gun registry were considered unacceptable breaches of privacy.

Serious question:

Where did the term hookers and blow come from? Google shows a porn movie(s) made by a dude from Calgary of all places!!

They said you're disqualified if you don't fill out the form... they didn't say anything about being disqualified by hookers and blow.
