Claiming 'tips' during tax time?
My girlfriend works fulltime serving at a local restaurant. She served a customer that told her 'I would tip you, but you probably won't claim it at tax time.' This customer was serious and not joking. What are opinions on this issue of 'claiming tips/gratuities?'

Yeah . . . . . a customary tip for good service and whether or not the server claims it on her taxes are not connected topics.
The latter is between her and CCRA.

Hopefully the customer comes in again, then she can say "I would serve you this burger but you probably suffer from a heart condition."

I was of the impression that if the tip was on the credit card than it would be a lot harder for them to avoid claiming it.
I definitely think that they should claim their tips although I have no idea if they actually do or not. My guess would be that a lot of the servers claim some tips but not all of them.
I also agree that the customer is a jack###. I am pretty sure that his job isn't to be the morality police. I would rank him up there with the people who drive slow in the left lane and think they are doing everyone behind them a favour by preventing them from getting a ticket.

Did he reduce the tip by the amount that he thought she should be paying in taxes, or did he leave nothing? Dick move either way, but I'm curious to know whether he's trying to be the morality police or if he's just a cheap guy with a lame excuse.

If he reduced it by the amount of taxes he thought she would need to pay, wouldn't he also need to remit the amount to the CRA? (It's still stupid, but at least it'd be logically consistent)
Basically, he's a cheap ass.

I worked as a server all through college and some of the servers claimed their tips and some claimed none. The ones that claimed none usually ended up getting audited or re-asssessed at some point. The servers who claimed their tips only claimed a portion of them (say 10-25% of their gross wages) and never had any issues with CCRA. I think the government realizes that nobody is going to claim all their tips but at least if you make an effort and claim something somewhat reasonable, they usually won't make an issue of it...at least from my personal experience.

Do you seriously need that explained to you?
If he said he was not tipping due to the expectation that she wasn't going to pay taxes on it, but really didn't do it because he was just a cheap ass, then he lied.

No, establishments simply pay out the portion of tip on CC transaction as cash to the employee.
What the heck was this guy expecting her to do; whip out her NOA as proof.

How the hell does anyone know if he's being cheap? Money guy wasn't speculating, he said it in an absolute. That's just rubbish. The guy could really just be anal about servers not paying taxes on tips.
