Honestly, Rob Anders is a gift to the Liberals and the NDP. I am about as conservative as they come, and I think the man is a blithering idiot. I was sitting at YYC waiting for my boarding call last Monday when I heard them come on the PA and page him for his "final boarding call" for his flight to Ottawa. My first thought was "Oops, Anders must have been sleeping again". Second thought was "I hope he doesn't make it...."

Ummm that was the most sarcastic post of the year. haha
Anders is not an outcast, he is a key part of the CPC party. Why do you think Harper bends over backwards to support him, while non i-sheep voters in Calgary West gets bent over.
As a blatant anti-Harperist you can twist and bend the truth anyway you want to in order to try and make Harper look bad, but the truth is this...

The Conservative Party's national council has taken over the Calgary West riding, whose board members have been trying to oust the local Tory candidate for the next election.
The 30-member board of the Calgary West Conservative Association has been trying to oust MP Rob Anders and hold a nomination race in the riding.
Anders, who was first elected in Calgary West as a Reform MP in 1997, and his supporters lost control of the riding association when the board changed last year. The new board members then began gathering support for an open nomination meeting.
But when they failed to get the necessary backing of two-thirds of constituency members needed to hold a nomination race, Anders was declared the official Tory candidate.
The federal Conservative Party instituted the two-thirds requirement last year for constituencies that want to oust an incumbent. No riding was able to reach that threshold, so all sitting Conservative MPs, including Anders, were declared candidates for the next election.
Nevertheless, the board continued pursuing its efforts to organize a nomination race — which would be the riding' first since 2004 — and planned to vote on the matter at the riding association's next annual general meeting (AGM).
"Recent steps taken by the board have not respected or reflected the opinions and rights of the members of the Calgary West Conservative Association," national council president John Walsh wrote in a letter informing the riding association of the takeover. "Nor have they respected the various constitutional requirements which bind the board."
The national council has voted to take control of the AGM, Walsh wrote, and in the meantime, local board members won't have access to party funds or the riding membership list.
The board failed to get the necessary 2/3rd support from constituency members in order to hold a nomination race, in order to challenge Anders. Blame the stupid constituency members... don't make up stuff and blame Harper.
It is crap like this that makes me think Anders has something damning on Harper from the far past that would need to stay buried if he is to continue leading the CCP.

Not really. Calgary West could be the easiest riding for either party to ever win in Calgary, yet they are too incompetent to manage it. Meanwhile, nobody outside of Calgary will ever really care what he has to say.

At this point, it's the only rational explanation.

Right, so there chances there are 10,000 to 1 in stead of 50,000 to 1? I don't think incompetence really has anything to do with why they can't win in Calgary.

Given Anders tendency for public gaffes is bound to come out eventually. Some hungry journalist should just straight up ask him "So, you and Mr. Harper have a long standing relationship that I'm sure is filled with ups & downs, why do you tell me about some of them..."
Boom, we get a "Well this one time I walked in on Harper eating a live kitten during a hospital visit to sick kids...."

You're basically asking Bertuzzied not to post on this forum any more.
An old University of Calgary Political Science professor, who shall remain nameless, told me that he has been very successful in canvassing his support in the riding. He fund raises well and has a good organization behind him. At least this was the case pre-2006. I don't know if anything has changed since then.

hahaha. ok dude. My post in line with everyone else's that obviously Anders has something on Harper for him to still be a MP. Why not blame Harper? he has the power to make Anders resign. Why hasn't he? How many more chances is he going to give Rob?
If you were an owner of a company and you had a jackass employee who falls asleep on the job, makes outrageous stupid comments to the media would you not let him go?
Like I said i knew Anders in University. Sure it was all fun and giggles laughing at his outrageous right-wing, republican comments in 2nd year university, but now this jack ass is representing me in the House of Commons. What a disgrace.

You're right. I can't really say they are incompetent because neither party even tries to win a seat here. Placeholder candidates and minimal spending. Frankly, I find the inability to defeat Anders in an election to be a fault of the competing parties, not a fault of the electorate. It says a lot when you can't convince anyone that your candidate can't do a better job than Anders.

The problem is, anyone with a pulse could do a better job than Anders, and every voter in the riding knows it. Yet the vote always goes to the worst MP in Canada. People vote for the party in Calgary West and nothing more, and history has proven that. You could put a Liberal superstar, if there is such a thing, in that riding and throw all sorts of money at it and people would still put the check mark beside the one who has "conservative" beside their name. Not everyone, obviously, but the vast majority.
My dilemma now is, as a slightly left of centre Calgary West voter who feels that we could get better governance from a tree, is that I can either buy myself a CPC membership and help nominate someone capable of the job (since the riding will always vote CPC anyway, even when they have every reason not to), or let him remain so he can continue to embarrass the party through his routine antics. I'll wait to see what the riding boundaries and the nominations are like for the next election first, but I may find myself in the odd position of being a card-carrying conservative who finds the Conservative Party of Canada to be way too conservative.
I am surprised that anyone actually votes for him, even staunch conservatives. Voting against him would be the best thing that a true conservative could do as it would send a clear message to the party and the riding would end up with better representation - albeit after a term under another party.
