I am sure this point had been made before, but I don't see the issue with having a different connector type.
The fact that the cable can 'reconfigure' itself for multiple uses makes it more than worthwhile. With 8 wires, it will clearly support USB3 when the need is there, likely with just an OS update.
While I would like a universal connector, I really cant blame them for wanting to move forwards instead of backwards and adopting microusb.

Apple is doing what they always do with this new connector: Finding new ways to try and lock you into their ecosystem. Its brilliant as a business move, and as long as they have people who willingly give them the cash money, why wouldn't they continue to exploit their consumer base? Apple cares about money first, not their customers.

Holy crap. you sound like a bible thumper. This is what apple has on people. it's almost like a religion. Snicker at them because they 'reinvented' a usb 2.0 cable and get a cleansed... hahahaa.
A bible thumper? Really? I'm not trying to force my world view on anyone. Quite the contrary. I don't care what kind of phone anyone has. I don't even care if you think my phone sucks. I'm just saying that you should try not to be such a dick about it.
I've used both the lightning plug and I use my micro usb plug every day, and I can say the lightning one is far more user friendly. It's like plugging in a set of headphones, you don't need to look at it or fiddle with it to line it up.
Again, a small thing, but small things repeated over and over add up to big things. Not even consciously, but they still impact our perceptions and decisions.
And yes it makes them more money too, that's the whole point of running a company, shocking.

Aside from being the first to do indoor mapping as well as including famous paintings/art items in their maps, Google did a first today by doing an underwater map of the great barrier reef. Underwater "street" view? http://www.paritynews.com/web-news/i...er-street-view

Maybe, it is a tad more convenient. I think you will forget about all that slight ease of use the first time you end up at a friend's house with a dead phone needing a charge... chances are they'll have a micro usb adapter and maybe an old Apple charger, but it will be a while before you can count on randomly finding a lightning charger.
And what about all these cars, treadmills, stereos etc with ipod inputs... I guess they'll all be useless to new apple stuff.
Lastly, my favorite use for my apple stuff is the composite video out, and how nicely it does anamorphic widescreen. Really my main reason for keeping my ipad and ipod is for providing content to the rear tvs in my cars, which all seem to only have comp in inputs. I guess I will have to keep buying old iPods for this purpose until I find an hdmi car.

Your friends house is going to have a lighting adapter with a couple months to a year as well.
Why would you have to buy old iPods? The lightning connector should be able to do composite out.

I guess it depends who your friends are... if you hang around with a bunch of apply people you should be good. But don't come to my house hoping to charge your new iPhone!
I actually don't see any video out accessories for the iPhone 5, and with it being all digital, doubt very much a composite out is coming.
Someone please explain the point of the $30 adapter? Since it doesn't support audio or video, I guess it only supports charging? Why pay $30 to be able to use your old charger??

I guess if you have a lot of last gen apple products and get the iPhone 5 then you can still use all the old accessories.
Composite Video out has always been possible out of the headphone jack, as well.
I think that was true with older Android phones, not with Apple products, even the S3 won't be able to support composite out. That's what I understand, not 100% though.
Yes Apple seriously missed the mark with the Maps fiasco. It's ego got the better of it. It's not a huge dent on its reputation because there people realize that this is a huge new venture, but the timing is lousy.
The ability of iOS to do every other task very well is going to keep it moving forward till Maps can catch up.
Pogue is usually a pretty big Apple fan too, so its really saying something when he gives it that kind of review. Wonder if it will get him off Apple's special list of friendly journalists...

The first Apple product I had was a 13 inch Macbook probably 5 years ago. I loved that little magnetic click you got when you attached the charger to the laptop.. I think I'm quoting Steve Jobs here.. but it was a very satisfying little click.
