DisplayMate has released their test results of the screen on the iPhone 5.

Who is DisplayMate?
Quote:
DisplayMate is the recognized worldwide standard for image and picture quality. Over 200 computer and video publications in 50 countries use DisplayMate for their editorial reviews, lab testing, and evaluations of video hardware. DisplayMate is used by The Imaging Science Foundation to train professional video calibrators. And DisplayMate has been adopted as the official reference standard for judging displays at major international industry events. DisplayMate is used by all of the top-tier manufacturers in their R&D Labs or production lines, and even by NASA.

The iPhone 5 Display:
It’s still a Retina Display with 326 Pixels Per Inch PPI and with a Resolution of 1136x640 pixels. We were hoping for 1280x720, which is Standard High Definition HD, but presumably that will be for the iPhone 6. That’s not a disappointment, just a wish list… Based on our extensive Lab measurements the iPhone 5 has a true state-of-the-art display – it’s not perfect and there is plenty of room for improvements (and competitors) but it’s the best Smartphone display we have tested to date.

We’ll examine the iPhone 5 display in detail below, but here are the Highlights: it is the Brightest Smartphone we have tested in the Shoot-Out series, it has one of the lowest screen Reflectance values we have ever measured, it has the highest Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light for any Mobile device we have ever tested, and it’s Color Gamut and Factory Calibration are second only to the new iPad. What are the downsides? The White Point is still somewhat too blue like most Smartphones, and at Maximum Brightness it has a shorter Running Time than the iPhone 4, which is not surprising since it has a larger screen and a larger Color Gamut but roughly the same capacity battery.

The Galaxy S III Display:
Samsung also features their displays when marketing Smartphones, but they have taken a very different approach – they are using Samsung’s own OLED displays, a new and rapidly evolving display technology that is very different from LCDs, with its own particular set of advantages and disadvantages. It’s a new technology that attracts early adopters, but it has not yet been refined to the same degree as LCDs, which have been mainstream for over 20 years. It’s clear that OLEDs in the near future will do to LCDs what LCDs did to CRTs, but we are not there yet… So OLEDs have a number of rough spots that show up clearly in our objective Lab testing.

We’ll examine the OLED Galaxy S III display in detail below, but here are the Highlights: the Brightness is about half of the iPhone 5 due to power limits from the lower power efficiency of OLEDs and concerns regarding premature OLED aging. The Color Gamut is not only much larger than the Standard Color Gamut, which leads to distorted and exaggerated colors, but the Color Gamut is quite lopsided, with Green being a lot more saturated than Red or Blue, which adds a Green color caste to many images. Samsung has not bothered to correct or calibrate their display colors to bring them into closer agreement with the Standard sRGB / Rec.709 Color Gamut, so many images appear over saturated and gaudy. Running Time on battery is less than the iPhone 5 due to the lower power efficiency of OLEDs, even given that the Galaxy S III has a much larger battery capacity and much lower Brightness.

The Galaxy S III has a PenTile OLED display, which has only half of the number of Red and Blue sub-pixels as in standard RGB displays, like those on the iPhones. The eye’s resolution for color image detail is lower, so this works well for photographic and video image content, but NOT for computer generated colored text and fine graphics because it produces visible pixelation, moiré, and other very visible artifacts, so a PenTile display is not as sharp as its pixel Resolution and PPI would indicate. PenTile technology does have advantages in manufacturing, aging and cost. For a more detailed analysis see our Samsung Galaxy S OLED Display Technology Shoot-Out.

I don't think they can do that unless they ban all S3 sales in the world.

hmmm people said the same thing to me when NFLX was at $300 and i thought it was a $90 stock... hehe

Quote:
Analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray said the sales shortfall is partially because he and others assumed Apple's sales figures would include all phones that were preordered online. He believes that would add up to a million additional units to the total sales, as the company quickly sold out of launch-day stock.
Quote:
Munster believes Apple will be able to achieve a balance in supply and demand by the end of the December quarter. As a result, he said he remains comfortable with his projection of 49 million iPhone sales in the holiday shopping period.

Got this e-mail from Telus today: not a bad compromise.

Thanks for pre-ordering iPhone 5 (16GB) with TELUS. This device has been so popular that there's a very limited quantity available across Canada and internationally. To help manage our restricted supply, we're offering select pre-order customers a free upgrade to a 32GB phone if you're willing to wait two weeks to receive it.

What this means for you
If you decide to take this offer, we'll send you a 32GB iPhone instead of a 16GB iPhone. You will receive your iPhone 5 on or before Friday October 12 instead of Friday September 28. If you choose not to take this offer, you will get your iPhone 5 (16GB) on Friday, September 28.

I'd get the 32 GB in a heartbeat. When my wife picked up her phone they told her there was a similar shortage, and offerent the 64 GB as a $50 upgrade over the 32 GB she was picking up. I wish I had been there to tell her to get it.

Lightning connector dynamically assigns pin functions.

This will mean it will take slightly longer for third party cables to come out I imagine. As the article states, it will allow the connector to add new functionality in the future, that perhaps is unimagined now.

The lightning connector is some pretty cool engineering, a micro USB doesn't cut it

It connects your phone to a computer or to a wall socket to charge it...

Maybe if you were ranting about the camera or the display or the CPU you would be taken more seriously... hahahhaahhahahaahahhaha.

Now that iPhones sync wirelessly, who cares whether the connector cord is USB 2 or USB 3?

It's really not that big of an issue for most people.

The daily deals site often have sweet accessories. I LOVE my 10-foot charging cord. When you guys are standing by the wall with your two-footer, I can practically cross the room with this baby. There are lots of other nice things also.

My cord is Apple and only $15.

More reading on the cable here and what makes it futureproof:

Quote:
Lightning is adaptive.
All 8 pins are used for signals, and all or most can be switched to be used for power. So it makes no sense to say “Lightning is USB2-only” or whatever.
The outer plug shell is used as ground reference and connected to the device shell.
At least one (probably at most two) of the pins is used for detecting what sort of plug is plugged in.
All plugs have to contain a controller/driver chip to implement the “adaptive” thing.
The device watches for a momentary short on all pins (by the leading edge of the plug) to detect plug insertion/removal.
The pins on the plug are deactivated until after the plug is fully inserted, when a wake-up signal on one of the pins cues the chip inside the plug. This avoids any shorting hazard while the plug isn’t inside the connector.
The controller/driver chip tells the device what type it is, and for cases like the Lightning-to-USB cable whether a charger (that sends power) or a device (that needs power) is on the other end.
The device can then switch the other pins between the SoC’s data lines or the power circuitry, as needed in each case.
Once everything is properly set up, the controller/driver chip gets digital signals from the SoC and converts them – via serial/parallel, ADC/DAC, differential drivers or whatever – to whatever is needed by the interface on the other end of the adapter or cable. It could even re-encode these signals to some other format to use fewer wires, gain noise-immunity or whatever, and re-decode them on the other end; it’s all flexible. It could even convert to optical.
So it does sound like there was some impressive engineering, even if it is "just a cable."
