The real irony here is that Seattle's arena is not going to be subsidized by tax payers.

Yes I should have clarified, the tax payers are providing financing but will be paid back, at least that's the theory. So it is a subsidy my bad, but from my vantage, not nearly as egregious a subsidy as what's going on the 'chuk.

I have heard from a couple connected folks in Edmonton that Katz may not have anywhere near the dough people think.
The city knows it, so is being ultra cautious.
He of course knows it, so needs a dance partner to pick up more and more of the tab.

Yes I was thinking about that this week. Looks more and more like that's what's going on. Larry Ryckman owns the Oilers.

I also wonder where on the pecking order he thinks he is for relocation. Seems like there's some other franchises out there who would pull rank for a relocation. He can't seriously think a stunt like this is going to work right?

Yeah, it seems really bone-headed. The NHL is doing everything it can to keep the Coyotes in Arizona... the NHL is going to do everything it can to keep a 5 time cup winner in a hockey market.
It's Gobias Industries all over again.

It's Edmonton. The town where the circus never leaves.

Could the karmic result of cheering for your team to lose be losing your team?

Now they can lose all the games they want, and Oiler fans won't have to pay a cent in the process. Really, it's a win-win for all parties involved.

But is Katz a Billionaire, or is Rexall Drugs worth billions?
Doesn't he live primarily in Vancouver? A move to Seattle would actually allow him to go see his team play more often.
I personally don't think the government should be funding the arena - not in Edmonton, or Calgary, or Regina for that matter. They will never get the money back out of it.

Posturing and nothing more. Big winners in this are the Flames. They either go to being Alberta's only team (highly doubtful) or when the government caves in to Katz they will be in for a similar deal without doing the dirty work.

The thing is if the Oilers move another team won't be moving in without a new arena or at least the promise of one. Bettman wouldn't allow it. It will probably have to be built with 100% taxpayer money at that point, such as Quebec City, unless they run into a sweetheart deal such as in Seattle.
Sure it's a great toy to have and the public shouldn't be required to build the facility but if it wants to compete against other cities that will, Edmonton and Calgary are going to have to put up public money.

Oiler fans should be begging Katz and his pack of losers to move out of town. The chances of getting a relocated or expansion team are far more likely than the current organization ever hiring someone competent to run anything to do with the franchise.

Like Vulcan said no new owner will pony up for an expansion team to play in Rexall Place or the Saddledome for that matter without a deal in place for a new arena. Katz has all the leverage here. He'll get a new arena in Edmonton or maybe Seattle.

For sure. But that balance sheet could have holes.
It was explained to me but not sure I am smart enough to get it or even if its true, so I am not trying to convince anyone.
What interesting is that rumours were swirling in edmontons connected crowd 2 months ago.
