Default Hit and Run

I just got home from a weekend hiking trip and found the rear bumper and fender torn off my car. It was parked on 17th Ave near 18th street outside my house and someone drove into the rear driver side. Naturally, they left no information. I only have 3rd party liability insurance because I was unemployed until very recently and couldn't afford any more; I haven't been able to call Meloche Monnex yet, but i really doubt that I'm covered on this.

If there anything I can do besides just paying for it and moving on?

I had a buddy who was rear ended, actually talked to the guy, agreed to meet in a parking lot about 100 metres away, then watched as the guy just took off. The insurance company said there was nothing they could do without a licence plate or piece of the other car. I believe you may be hooped.

Try canvasing you neighbours, or posting signs up around the community. Someone may have witnessed it. Unless you can ID the vehicle you are hooped. BTW, depending on the amount of damage you will need to report it to the police, otherwise a bodyshop won't look at it.

Same thing happened to my inlaws yesterday in Winnipeg on their drive back to Calgary. Their truck was in the hotel parking lot and someone backed into it and the rear quarter-panel was crushed and caved in.

No note, no info. They reported to the police and the hotel said that they will most likely have the incident on video surveillance. Saving grace is that they have full coverage too, but it's still a bull#### move.

Same thing happened to me this weekend. Left my car parked in Kensington overnight and someone nailed my passenger side door. Looks like the whole door will need to be replaced. No note. Unreal.

I'm not surprised that a) they damaged your car, and b) they didn't leave a note. The lack of basic respect for other people's property in this city is despicable. We've had our car damaged 4 different ways in the last 8 months by the carelessness of others.

Part of me is really looking forward to being able to drive my crappy winter beater so I at least won't feel as paranoid.

You would be suprised how many people have damaged vehicles with "Notes" on them but insted of contact information they write "sorry" on a piece of paper to make it look like they are putting their info down and drive away. I see that atleast once a month.

What ever happened with your or your wife's situation? Buddy initially offered to pay, then went into D-bag mode.

He ended up paying once he realized that the place I took it too for an inspection was cheaper than "his guy" and I wasn't trying to rip him off. Also, I had a pretty open and shut case (had witness who was willing to testify and I also recorded our phone conversations where he admitted fault) so the guy was just wasting his time stalling, and I think he realized that it was in his best interested to pay up.

Then a week later, some a-hole damaged our mirror when he banged into it while parking. Of course no note there either, just a nice streak of golden paint.

I'm slowly going crazy.

All the hit and runs (I've been hit a few times in the past couple months) makes you wonder why anyone would want to drive a nice car in this city...

Man. I remember when I was much younger, I backed into a car in a parking lot. I cracked the front license plater cap (or whatever you call it. The thing you put in place of the front plate in order to make the bumper look whole) on an old Grand Am. I left a note and ended up paying $700 for an entirely new bumper. The family showed me 3 estimates and that was the cheapest one.

It sucked, but at least I didn't feel like a dick after. A sucker, maybe. But not a dick.

In the 1 year I have had my 2011 Hyundai, I have had it vandalized 4 times. It has been keyed, side panel was kicked (in the follow through of a kick used to kick a cup of Starbucks all over my car....I knew I shouldnt have parked beside that cup!), and hit and run.

^You've been keyed and has someone kick your car? What are you doing to piss so many people off?
