I've had 4 carpet experiences recently:
Lowes: Had about 5-600 sqft done including stairs was about $2400 (expensive). Service was quick and professional, only had to deal with the store. Check here because they often have a free install deal, though that doesn't include stairs or anything else non-standard.
Home Depot: Had 16 stairs and 2 landings done, was $2200 (uber expensive, but had no choice as I was trying to match some carpet and after visiting 15 stores Home Depot was the only one that was close). Only had to deal with the store, install was quick and professional.
End of the Roll: Had to get some carpet done on short notice (like within 2 days), they were able to get it done for me. Cost $6500 ($5k for carpet and underlay, $1.5k for install) for 15 stairs and about 1400 square feet. The estimator impressed me greatly by suggesting I paint Killz on the floor to lock in any possible odours from pet stains that may have soaked into the plywood floor. Installers were quick but weren't very personable, they didn't clean up after themselves at all.
Oaktree Carpets: About 600sqft, I think it was about $2000 total (can't remember for sure, but I know I chose a higher end carpet and thicker than usual underlay to satisfy a condo board), the install was only about $550 of that, with lots of built in closets to work around and furniture to move. They did a great job, super nice guys too I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Pro-west Carpets is the name, PM me if you need their email.
