I'm actually fairly impressed with the new maps app. A couple issues I've noticed in Calgary: every oil & gas exploration company downtown with "gas" in their name is flagged as a gas station and the park above Memorial is labelled as "Mc Huge Bluff Park" which while it sounds interesting isn't entirely accurate (should be McHugh Bluff). The lack of transit integration does suck though.

I cannot find what it is made off but it looks like your standard plastic adapter but I am not sure. I would think it would be better off with a round or oval metal housing around it for strength.

For what it's worth: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7...u-should-know/
How is it different from the 30-pin connector?
It's 80 percent smaller yet sturdier, and it's reversible, so you don't have to worry about which side is the top or bottom when you connect.
Looks not too shabby in hand either:

Straight up, Apple screwed the pooch with the new Maps app. They let a business squabble effect the end user in a negative manner.
In the past Apple understood why you don't do that. The user who's lost in a strange city really doesn't give a flying fata' what decision you made in the boardroom 6 months earlier. All they know is "What the ****, the old app had this functionality. This new one sucks ***" and now their mad & lost.
Surprised to see such a garbage app released by Apple, it's one thing to release a brand spanking new application (eg: passbook) with some bugs, but to degrade the users experience by replacing a good app with trash?

It could have been both ways as well, as that is apparently what also happened with the YouTube app. They "mutually" terminated the licensing agreement.

No, too big of a potential revenue stream, and too large of a user base.
They released an independent Youtube app on the App Store, and I am sure Maps will come too

I doubt it considering a large portion of their userbase are iOS users.
They're just going to release a standalone Maps app for iOS like they did with the YouTube app.
Nice of Apple to arrogantly screw over their users by removing a great app and replacing it with a crappy one.

For me the biggest issue with the new maps is that they're removing transit route-finding. When I'm in another city, nothing is more useful than being able to compare transit times with walking distances to figure out the best way of getting somewhere. The idea that you might need to jump between two separate apps to do that is so silly, and such a step backwards.

The new maps is like hiring the A-Team, then going out and replacing them with the Wonder Twins. The job will probably still get done, but it'll be annoying as hell.
Apple Maps, activate!

I had to go to the metal supermarket in the SE a couple of days ago. On my ipad, Google maps found it, gave me my directions no problem. Yesterday, after I installed ios6, I tried the exact same address and variations of it, and it could no longer be found. That address doesn't exist in Calgary anymore. I could see people waiting to upgrade if they depend on maps

Or until Google releases their own app, or using the browser version temporarily.
When I heard that iOS6 would use Tom Tom and OpenMap data, I was pretty skeptical that they'd be able to even come close to Google.

I don't really have too much hate for Maps at the moment, but I see the annoyance. When Apple announced they were dropping the Google Map app I started using other mapping services to see how they measured up. An app like Waze for instance is one of the partners, and in my opinion is a brilliant little app. As much as I enjoyed using it, the location search was just never on the same level as Google. Much like Photon above, I was immediately concerned as no service is overly strong in comparison.
One feature Waze has that Apple Maps doesn't (and for obvious reason) is a clear way to report a map issue. I mentioned that my workplace wasn't showing at the proper address and within 12 hours had a personal email from the community developer who fixed it. Incredible service. Of course Waze is working with several million less users so they can do that, but it's still incredibly handy.
From what I've used of Maps it has been a good experience for the most part. Several things are obviously worse, but many things are better. For a 1.0 this is decent and pretty much on par with most initial apple releases (the "it doesn't have that?" feature is cranked to 11). However, like with most Apple apps I'm sure over time it'll gradually get to where it needs to be. As long as google gets their app in the app store reasonably quick I'll be pleased.
