Fall Half Marathons?
I was thinking of looking for a half marathon to sign up for for this fall in the Calgary area.
I know there is the Last Chance one, but I'll be away that weekend in November.
Anyone know of a race in or around Calgary in the next month or so?

Harvest Half is sold out. There was a new half marathon in Cochrane in the new river park last weekend . . . . very few ran it.
Melissa's is sold out but they might still be looking for pace bunnies where you can run for free. They were putting out a call last week for them.
St. Albert this coming weekend:

Fernie Half Marathon next weekend:

Something exotic, two person, 21.1 km Heli-run in a few days

I'm running the Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon in Scottsdale in early December!!! Did the Rocky Mountain Half and Calgary Half earlier this year.
Good luck!!!
EDIT: Actually, here's one you might like. I've run this in the past and its full of jackrabbits and few common folk because of the very odd distance . . . . The Robbie Hamilton 10 miler (16.5 km).

If I recall correctly, the finishers medal is a cookie you can eat.

Check here for race bibs

Lots of people that are selling. I bought one to Melissa's last year a week before the race with no problem whatsoever.

So, if you win the women's 55-60 division, bring some lipstick to try and sell it when you pick up the award.
In all seriousness, if you're picking up a race bib for Alice Smith, 55 years of age, and you're really Rick Roll, age 23, they might not give it to you as you're past the deadline for changes.
Race Directors hate this kind of thing for insurance and medical reasons.

I know BBS, and I will vouch for the fact that he looks like a 55 year old grandma that smokes 4 packs a day.
Lipstick and tissues shouldn't be a problem for him either.

Although nobody asked, I'm doing the Ottawa Army run on Sunday. It's the only one I plan on doing every year... the money raised goes to "Soldier On" and "Military Families Fund". I set my PR last year at 1:44 and really want to push myself to beat that on Sunday.
If I don't I'm also doing the Toronto Waterfront half in mid-October, which will be even faster course since the waterfront is so flat. So I might be able to beat my best there.

I only did the half marathon a few years back. I actually got my PB there as it was perfect weather and a relatively flat course. My wife did run the marathon though, there are a few interesting hills if I recall correctly.
I thought it was well organized with the different corrals and what not. Is it the Rock and Roll one? I guess I should have asked that first.

Yeah, it's the rock and roll marathon. I'm really looking forward to it, but I know a couple people who did it last year and they said there was an issue with the water coming from hydrants and that it was super crowded.

There are a lot of people that run in the race for sure but as I mentioned, they were pretty organized a few years back and if you give them your correct goal time, you should be slotted in the right corral. It is a bit of a poop show getting to the starting line but it is fun watching those stumble home from a long night of partying haha.

Although nobody asked, I played shinny last Friday, and I scored 3 goals and had 1 assist.
(I find it funny how runners/triathletes always bring up their distances and times out of the blue in every conversation they can).
As you were.

I'm Truly Sorry For This, But You're About To Hear All About The Last Marathon I Ran
BY MICHAEL COWIE
Listen, it's great catching up with you, and believe me, I'm really enjoying this conversation we're having, but I'm afraid I now have to do something that will make this exchange very awkward and unpleasant for you. I feel absolutely terrible about it, and so I want to give you fair warning: You're about to hear all about the marathon I just ran.
I'm truly sorry, but I'm going to have to go pretty in depth about my months of preparation, talk all about the encouragement and support I received from friends and family, and give you a mile-by-mile assessment of my state of mind and physical condition during the race. I hate to say it, but it's going to take quite a bit of your time.
Mile split times, cramping, hydration levels, chafing—you're about to hear all of that. Plus, I'll be dwelling on one point around mile 17 when I considered stopping but then decided to keep going because I'd already come so far. There's a lot to cover, so I want to be upfront and apologize right off the bat. This is going to be pretty unbearable.

I just figured this thread would predominantly be read by other runners of the same ilk....

^^^Anyone who runs knows how much work and prep is involved so I appreciate knowing since it is motivating.
On that note, I love FB and those linked apps like Runtastic since many FB friends run and make me a better runner with their times and words of encouragement.

The Onion parody highlights how unlikely it was that Republican Presidential candidate Paul Ryan accidentally mixed up a sub 3 hour with a sub 4 hour marathon time. No one who runs would make that mistake.

Harvest Half increased from 750 to 1,000 people this year and sold out. Last Chance is only 500 and will sell out soon likely a day or two after the Harvest Half as many people who missed their goals will want to retool/reload Not sure why they cap these at relatively low entries, but must be a liability reason. Not enough races this time of year and lots of people wanting to run before hibernating.

Speaking of half marathons, there is a move afoot to give it an actual name since there is nothing half about running 13.1 miles.
I read in Runner's World that Pikermi, which is a town half way between Athens and Marathon, Greece, is the preferred term and a growing movement.
Have no idea if it will catch on but interesting nevertheless.
Here is the FB and runner's world links:

When I was setting up the Millarville "Run To The Farmers' Market" Half Marathon, which debuted this year, I found the race calendar in the Fall to be pretty crowded, for my purposes at least.
If in the Fall, it had to happen before the final Farmers Market on Oct. 6 and you're in competition with major races from early September to the first weekend of October, including the Rocky Mountain Half, Melissa's and the Harvest Half. There's a new Half that just started in Cochrane and ran last weekend.
Its probably true that from the second weekend of October onward, there's not a lot on the calendar.
So we went to the Spring. We set it on the opening date of the Farmers Market in June, three weeks after the Calgary Marathon Weekend and three weeks before the Stampede Half, understanding that you're really marketing to the Calgary crowd and need to give them room to recover. It's one week after the Footstock Half and two weeks ahead of the High River Half.
We had 300 registrations the first year and will have a race cap of 750 for June 15, 2013. We'll probably be between 500 and 750 in year two judging from the very positive feedback we had. We'll take that race cap higher in future years.
I think we're the only point-to-point longer distance race in Alberta and one of the few in western Canada. These are popular in the USA. I haven't seen any other longer distance race in North America finishing at a large, operational Farmers' Market.
www.millarvillehalfmarathon.com We'll open for registrations in January. There's a video and photo gallery of the course there if you're interested.
Course record is 1:14 for men and 1:21 for women.
Some stats:
There are now more half marathon runners than there are 10 km runners in North America.
Sixty percent of half marathoners first ran the distance from 2009 onward.
Sixty percent of half marathoners are women. Sixty percent of full marathoners are men.
I would expect to see the distance in the Olympics at some point.
