I don't find it surprising at all. You expected a better effort from a hipster?

It's pretty obvious he wasn't a sleek con-man planning all of his steps. Based on the articles telling the story it seems as though he probably wasn't planning to scam money when he started faking the Cancer. He would have been smart to flee the country before he was charged but it's not like he had all that much money to travel around and he probably didn't expect the story to blow up in the media so much.

My guess is that he started the cancer thing to provoke sympathy and caring and attention from the people around him. He desperately needs people to pay attention to him and care about him and this probably seemed like a good way to do it. It's possible it wasn't even a totally conscious decision to begin faking it. Then it spiralled out of control.

He's been arrested, btw.

While true, its not like $7,500 is going to get you very far for very long.

'Master criminal' this guy is not.

It's time to "Sklarbitrate":

Mr. Cook should be ordered to run across Canada raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Then, he should be compelled to stand in the middle of the mosh pit at the next Dudes concert.

His face really annoys me.

And he doesn't deserve that much chest hair. That's reserved for real men.

Yeah I really think it was about the attention more and he just kinda schlepped into scamming the money.

First, he'd faked those other illnesses before seemingly without an endgame. He started living with a new girlfriend after he started faking the Cancer, which wouldn't make sense if scamming money was the bigger priority. In the one detailed article it sounded like he was kinda faking symptoms like vision loss occasionally for a while and talking about his sisters having Cancer before he even went to a doctor. Although it's obviously hard to tell just as an observer, and I do think he has some kind of psychological issues, to me it still sounds like he was consciously deciding to do these things though.

As much as I am disgusted by what he has allegedly done, it's not like the guy is accused of molesting kids. IMHO, this is a case that deserves a jail and/or community service in a hospice sentence, not a jailhouse sh*tkicking.

He hasn't even been convicted of anything yet and was on remand. The people fist-pumping in the article over this are probably the first people to criticize countries like Iran for their treatment of suspects.

Accusations aside, the guy looks like the proverbial 98-pound weakling. That'd make him an easy target for prison tough guys.

Don't kid yourself. he total deserves this.

as for child molestors and rapists they deserve the dropping soap treatment.

We can make educated guesses. and although terrible, i'm sure the herald and sun aren't state-run propaganda newspapers.

I dunno. If one of the prisoners had a family member with actual cancer I don't really have a problem with him beating the piss out of this puke.

Maybe he didn't deserve a full out beatdown like he got but I doubt the other prisonmates were the most rational people.

No, the Sun is it's own propaganda machine.
