Happy FFVI was at th top of the list. Also glad earthbound made it that high. Or on the list at all.

All four are great games, but how the eff is New Vegas not ahead of all of them? That bothers me.

Surprisingly good list. I was certain FFVI or FFIV would be first, nice to see them both in the top five. I actually preferred FFIV slightly, only because I felt that the end game in FFVI the characters got a little too powerful and took away some of the challenge. Also, they can all cast the same spells if you have them learning properly, so it takes away a bit from their game play/personality if they are all powerful mages.
Glad to see ChronoTrigger right up there too. What an awesome game that was. Gotta agree with Diablo 2, and WoW has to be top ten even if you don't like it just based on what it was able to pull off.
Also really happy to see Secret of Mana up there. That was a great one too. Man, that was the golden age of RPG gaming and the system you wanted, the SNES. You had FFIV, then Secret of Mana, then ChronoTrigger, then FFVI.

FF6 beats Tactics IMO.. Tactics had great gameplay but the storyline was too complex for many to follow. 6 is perfection.

If you're an elder scrolls fanboy, you will prefer fallout 3. There is no other reason why you would. The atmosphere of the first two was far better, because juxtaposed against a bleak post-nuclear landscape and a whole lot of suffering and desperation, they had this sarcastic 50's motif that got equal billing. Which is what took the game from "good RPG" to legend status. Without that, the post-nuclear thing is, well, one-dimensional. Bethesda simply doesn't have the creative team to accomplish what Black Isle did.

I disagree, and it appears IGN does as well. Fallout 1/2 just couldn't create that atmosphere in their 2D world. It just couldn't be done.
Usually I am a fan of the classics, but I think just think Fallout 3 was the best 3D game ever made.
And yes, many people do prefer New Vegas. Oddly enough, it was developed by Obsidian, not Bethesda, which at the time, was what was left of Black Isle.

I knew Chrono Trigger would be up there. FFVII I thought would be higher. Some say it's overrated... I say it got someone who only really enjoyed playing one other RPG in his life (Chrono Trigger) to enjoy an RPG again. I prefer shooters and sports games, so FFVII definitely did something right.
I tried to get back into Final Fantasy later on and made the mistake of buying Final Fantasy XIII. Oops. Amazing game as far as graphics go, but the linear gameplay killed it.

Buy Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas... Awesome games!
Also, Mass Effect 2 and 3 (Unfortunately you cant get the first one on PS3 )
Dragon Age Origins is also a good game and will absorb 50-60 hours if you like to loot and do side quests.
Valkyria Chronicles is also a great game.
Check out youtube reviews of these games, they'll give you an idea of how they play.

Yep - which is why it has a bit more of that charm, notwithstanding that it's situated in a game environment (engine / gameplay platform) that isn't ideal for presenting what fallout's atmosphere is supposed to be.
As for what IGN thinks, I really do not care. Video game reviews have, at this stage, devolved into a total circle-jerk hype-show. It's one aspect of the industry that needs to change in order for better games to be produced. Right now, IGN and other similar outlets are what you'd get if the standard of movie reviews was such that every Michael Bay movie got 85% and up on Rotten Tomatoes.

Even the graphics start to wear thin after the umpteenth same enemy with different colouring. That was marginally okay back when you were making PSX games, but when the visuals are literally all the game has going for it, it's not. Either way, there are much nicer things to look at than a video game. If all you have is a backdrop and nothing worthwhile to put in front of it... well, no one needs to bury XIII any deeper anyway.
This morning I got a PSX emu on my Nexus and am now playing FF Tactics. Thank you, this thread.

Hrmm I tried Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age on CPU and didn't enjoy them.. maybe they are worth another shot, I have been playing NHL 2013 which is fun and bought FF Tactics on the PS store, which is also a lot of fun
I checked our Valkyria Chronicles and it looks pretty cool strat type game, which I like, so I think that will be the next game I try out. I also have not tried the Fallouts but have heard lots of good things about them, so I will put those on the list.

What I own on PS3 for RPGs: Mass Effect 2/3, Fallout 3, Dark Souls, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. You can get downloadable titles too, like over PSN I got a few PSone classics like Xenogears and Parasite Eve and Alundra.

If you have a decent PC then I have no idea why you would buy the majority of those games on the PS3. If you're going to play Mass Effect then don't start in the middle of the series. Go play the first one.
Get Eternal Sonata.

Depends what you're looking for. The original Fallout games are known for focusing more on the rebuild of society and, as one of the developers described it, "how you can't go forward without letting go of the past".
If you're looking for a game of that nature and more positive message (which the first two games were, despite the dark setting), they were better. Fallout 3 plays much straighter the concept of a crushed wasteland and in regards to creating that atmosphere, is better.

Yeah, I'm torn re: Fallout. I really love the atmosphere of Fallout 3, but the idea of rebuilding really appeals to me. Even New Vegas has its appeal.. but I haven't actually gotten around to finishing it, whoops. =P

Fallout 3 made me want a little bit of Minecraft added in, although I played it before I knew about Minecraft.
Walking around in the Wasteland, through piles of rubble and wreckage, I felt the desire to build my own base, rather than live out of a house in Megaton. With something like the Source engine you could start piling up cement blocks, but its obviously not the same. I'm imagining more something where you could pick up cement blocks in inventory and carry them to your building site, and then place them more like Minecraft blocks. I don't know if a post-apocalyptic game will ever address this niche desire that I have though.

I have not played any of the Fallout's either. Unless you count "Wasteland". Where can you play it nowadays? Wikipedia says you can play it OnLive on your tablet, but that doesn't seem like you would get the true feel of the game.
