Well, I have zero issues so far with the quality of my Focus. I still think it feels like a car that cost $10k more than it did.

Fully loaded...12k. Will keep it for a year and then I'll be able to trade it in for a new car at that point. Simply rebuilding my credit, but it's a cool car just the same

Is spending $12000 on a used car that you only plan to drive for one year a very wise move? That's like literally throwing money away.
That's a nice vehicle, why not just stick with it?

Because I really want to purchase a brand new vehicle and rebuild my credit. It's the way to go...besides, I'll get 10k back on this when I trade it in.

I have a crazy plan for getting good credit... don't buy a new car in a year, pay off the car you just bought, and then save the money you would have spent on new car payments.
I can see how you got poor credit in the first place. You have learned nothing from not getting credit approval to buy a new car, all it has done has made you even more determined to spend money that you apparently don't have. If you owe any money whatsoever on anything other than a mortgage, why would you spend money on a new car that you DON'T NEED instead of clearing up those bills?
Yah yah, I know you don't want any advice. That's too bad, because unlike a new car, you need plenty of it. Wake up out of your dreamworld and stop buying shiny toys to make believe you're not broke.

You're right, I don't want your advice. My wife and I have several plans in place and are going about paying bills off, purchasing and investing in RRSP's, rebuilding credit and getting back into a condo we want.
Thanks though...you have no idea who I am or what I'm doing, so perhaps it's you who is living in a dreamworld. You really have some nerve buddy.

You know, I've been coming to CP for almost 9 years now. I used to really enjoy coming here to read the latest news and talk Flames as much as possible. Every game I would come here to talk about the game and share the experience. I even started to feel so comfortable here, that I started to post some personal things from my life. Ups and downs, the good and the bad.
Lately though, it seems that CP has become a place where condescending people hang out trying to pretend they are more important than the previous poster and certainly more important than they really are. I've seen people basically run off this forum for having a different opinion or at least not the opinion that the "cool kids" have and I've been witness to pile on after pile on and even had it happen to me.
It's too bad. This used to be a great forum. Oh well, so long...time to go outside and play.

I think you should return that car and get a 10 year old minivan. It would make more sense financially.

Dad, is that you?
Haha, I think my dad gave me this exact same speech like 10 years ago when I told him I was buying a new car.
And it made so much sense back then as it does right now reading your post. Buying a new car should be reserved for the people who have lots of money and don't mind instantly throwing away 10k as soon as the wheels hit the road outside of the dealership.
My best friend bought a brand new dodge truck 3 years ago for 40k. He recently sold it for 15k.
If that's not a lesson then I don't know what is.

It's not. How many KMs? What condition was the truck in? What options? What colour? Where does your friend live?
All the above contribute to how much resale value one can potentially get out of a vehicle.
The simple equation of "$40,000 truck - 3 years = $15,000" tells us absolutely bugger all, and just the AutoTrader.ca listings alone would suggest that the vehicle either
a) had high mileage;
b) was in less than average condition;
c) was a lesser trim level;
d) any combination of a, b or c;
e) had an owner who willingly sold it for below market value (for which there could be a variety of reasons).

Is that the same wife that bought a car less than a month ago that is now yet another financial millstone? You'll pardon me if I frankly don't believe your "plans" are going to come to anything, especially if they include buying a new car a year from now.

Actually I do have some idea who you are and what you're doing, because you've told us. You're the guy with crappy credit who thinks that the shortcut to having money is the outward appearance of having money.
The only threads I remember of yours are the ones where you ask for advice on buying stuff, which appears to be your way of getting implicit approval for purchases you can't afford. "Oh, CP thinks I should buy this!" is what you are trying to get out of these threads. Well, too bad - I'm willing to call you out and tell you - "CP" thinks you shouldn't buy anything on credit, because you apparently can't handle your finances.
This isn't condescending, this is reality. Running away with your hands over your ears isn't going to make it go away forever. And to be clear, I'm not thinking I'm being your friend and doing you a favour, I'm hoping other people with a bit more self-judgment will see themselves in you and realize that you are the bad financial example they don't want to follow.

My personal suggestion would be get a 5-10 year old vehicle that is in good condition, a Hayes auto repair book and make due with what you can afford.
It isn't meant to be rude or snarky, but just honest and actually doing a massive favour in the long (and likely short) run. Managing expenses and cutting costs and luxuries is one of the most difficult things we can do however it is also one of the best things people can do. Having finances built upon credit is a risky proposition.

I've been here long enough to know that there are some fantastic people on this forum with skill sets that go way beyond hockey. CP has all sorts of members with different kinds of expertise (Politics, Finance, Cars, Medicine, Science etc.).....so if you put out a question, most of the time you're going to get a solid answer from someone in the know. It might not be the answer you're looking for, or an answer that makes you feel good.....but chances are there will be truth and experience behind it. CP can be pretty brutal this way, but it's hard to bull#### around here.
If you were smart, you would take the advice you get here (with a grain of salt as always) and use it to your advantage.....and not create some BS woe-is-me tale of CP past.

To get this thread somewhat back on topic, anyone have any experiences with Valentine Volvo and specifically the Volvo XC90. Looking to upgrade in the next year and just contemplating whether to buy used out of the states or through Valentine.

We bought our V50 from Valentine, and probably had the nicest car buying experience ever (Tyler was the salesman). Great experience from start to finish. It's not just some place built for yuppie suckers who are scared of conflict, so you can still negotiate too....I just remember it being fair and without any tinge of sleaze.
A month after we bought (we bought an 08 certified), our battery died, and they without hesitation replaced it for free even though they weren't obligated to. That was very nice of them.
Service there seems to be a little expensive....but all dealers are. You can always take your car to Mr. Volvo for off-warranty work if you wish.
Btw, the XC90 is more or less a 10 year old platform. We will most likely see an all new one next year.....so you may want to wait. You'll get something new then, and probably be able to get a nice discount on the current gen if it's not that important.
Also, you may want to man up and not get a mommy mobile SUV. (sorry had to throw that in there.....I can't talk about crossovers without getting a shot in).
