Skyrim at #7 is a complete joke. Shouldn't even have cracked the top 25.

Oblivion was better in every aspect minus graphics.

And Oblivion wasn't even particularly good.

#15: Secret of Mana
#14: Final Fantasy Tactics
#13: Planescape: Torment
#12: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
#11: Final Fantasy VII
...
#10: Fallout 3
#9: Mass Effect

Wtf? The games that just missed the top 10 are considerably better than those two.

I don't know if I would agree that Oblivion was better than Skyrim. Oblivion looked good for its day (though those character models . . .), but a lot of the world creation was done through computer generation. That meant you had vast tracts of uninteresting wilderness that has only been rectified recently through user mods. Compare that to Morrowind where everything was hand-placed. Bethesda realized bigger worlds did not always mean better worlds if most of it was boring, so they went back to hand-creating everything for Skyrim. Plus, those Oblivion gates were so tedious, ugh.

I still love Oblivion (I have it installed along with over 100 mods right now -- many of which are amazing and make it look just as good if not better than Skyrim), and I can see why someone may enjoy it more if they prefer the green, European look of Cyrodiil more than the dull tundra of Skyrim. But straight out of the box, no mods, I don't think Oblivion comes close to Skyrim. Of course, I also think Morrowind was the best 3D Elder Scrolls game.

I bought Skyrim and got bored of it after about 10 hours game play. Actually I was bored after 1 but I kept going hoping it would get better. I haven't been into a single player RPG since the good old days. A lot of the games on this list are too new for me to have played, but I do play MMO's and it is nice to see them get a nod and an appearance in the top 10. World of Warcraft is one of the best games ever put out in any genre, Blizzard did such an amazing job with the game. And continues to even after nearly 10 years. That is impressive.

However, the fact that DAoC isn't even in the top 100 is a joke. EQ was a great game, it did for MMO PvE what a lot of those 90's SNES RPG's did for the genre. But, DAoC did the same for MMO PvP. You had a game that was entirely based on Realm vs. Realm with small but very well done PvE content to compliment it. And it was a very successful game, for a longer period of time than EQ. It really set the bar high when it came to MMO PvP and did what no MMO had been able to do yet. I guess I could make the same argument for Asherons Call.

I am very happy with the number 1 selection, can't argue with that at all. Damn, now which of these games should I go back and play? So many choices..

not bad, got 3 out of four, not terribly surprised or disapointed zelda wasn't in the list, way back when RPGs came out, there were much fewer titles, seemed like the definition was much looser... (or was pretty much anything where the guy carried a sword)

I have a hard time considering any Zelda games RPGs. The only one that comes close is ALttP.

How does Dragon Age not make the list?

I can see Dragon Age 2 but Origins was a great game.

I loved Quest for Glory V: Dragonfire!!

I think the list is pretty well done. It's not going to please everyone, but I think they did a pretty good job.

I'm happy to see Super Mario RPG, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, KOTOR, the Fallouts, the Mass Effects and Earthbound and some others.

I thought Front Mission 4 was much better than 3, and I think Dragon Age: Origins should have cracked the top 100, but alas, a pretty good list.

Holy ####. I just realized that this has to be the first top 100 RPG list ever created that has Betrayal at Krondor exactly NOWHERE.

Really?

Holy crap, you're right! That game was miles ahead of it's time. I had the floppy disc version. IIRC it was 5 or 6 discs, maybe even more.

I thought Dragon Age had a whole host of problems (maybe I had too high of hopes, with the whole spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate talk), but I did think it was better than the first Mass Effect. It definitely should have fit in some place on this list, but there were a few games left off, like Arcanum, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Betrayal at Krondor (I was trying to think of the game a few days ago but couldn't remember the name!). I wonder if some were just forgotten? Did Secret of Evermore make it on?

i would swap KOTOR with Mass Effect in the list. storywise, the Mass Effect series probably goes down as the best video games of all time. but as a pure RPG, KOTOR is better

I love how I can pinpoint where a screenshot was taken in that game.

I'd like to have seen Elder Scrolls Arena or Daggerfall included in the list, as they were notable for their landscape size, and the fact that a lot of the terrain is dynamically/randomly generated.

Edit: I didn't even realize HP had mentioned dynamically generated terrain as a negative. Maybe I was in the minority for having enjoyed the idea of it.

I take issue with four of the top ten being JRPGs. I don't care how much fun they were (And they were fun), they're not RPGs. You role play in the truest sense, playing a role in a script that is pre-defined with very little deviation. You have little customization with what you play, as Cloud will never be a mage in looks and because of his limits you want him to be a melee fighter.

The Caveat to this, in my mind is Pokemon. More customization and after the story you are open to excelling in your choice of things.

The problem is "RPG" is an extremely nebulous term for games these days. I didn't check the article well, but I don't think they defined what they mean by RPG. We could almost break RPG into a tonne of categories like Tactical RPG (Fire Emblem, Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics), WRPG (Baldur's Gate, Fallout), JRPG (Final Fantasy, Tales of), ARPG (Mass Effect). Because of this variability, I think they just defined it as "all of the above".

Fallout 3 is a great game, but does not compare to the original pair. I'm thinking a bit of the recency effect is at work here...

Ehh.. I think the nostalgia effect is at work for you.

I think Fallout 1/2 are great games, but I think the atmosphere that was created in Fallout 3... no game compares.
