BTW Vandal Hearts was the original tactical based RPG, which came out before FFT. Absolutely loved that game.
Actually I think Shining Force 1 and 2 for Genesis would trump Vandal Hearts as it was a PS release, wasn't it? Also Ogre Battle, while slightly different in style, was for SNES and came out between SF 1 and 2 I believe. Vandal Hearts was the first one to bring that 3d terrain style combat into play though, for sure.
Either way, it was a great game and I enjoyed both it and the sequel many times.
I also understand what you mean about CC and its character development. The best part about these games is getting to know and identifying with different characters. I bet that if you picked twenty people from this thread to enter in their final SF1 roster or FF3 roster there would be a lot of differences. Its all about the players you liked and enjoyed playing. When you have a choice of 100 players its hard to figure out which ones you like, or you just stick with the same five and screw the rest, which isn't utilizing the whole game.
I liked replaying SF 1 and 2 with different members of my group, it made it more challenging and a lot of fun.

Man, I still remember my final FF3 lineup.
Setzer, Edgar, Shadow, Cyan.
Sabin and Terra were my 5th and 6ths that took me fairly far, but eventually I swapped them out. Setzer was insane when you geared him out and got 8x attacks with Fixed Dice / Atmas.

Once you spent enough time in Dinosaur Forest, you could go to Kefka's tower and annihilate everything with basically any combination.
I usually had Terra and Celes just as defaults, and Gogo for kicks, but the core piece was Gau wearing Genji Glove and Offering. Then start up the Stray Cat rage and you were dealing 80K of damage, either to multiple targets or just one. Enough to lay waste to Kefka in a single turn.
The SNES version had so many loopholes (e.g. how magic block actually was physical block as well) but that's kind of what I liked about it, so satisfying becoming godlike and smacking foes around like ants.

I still wish I could've somehow saved General Leo and put him in your party. I still remember thinking how badass and cool he was haha.

how long did it take you to master that combo for sabin's final rush move? that always seemed to be the penultimate move for me, followed by gogo mimicing it, not sure how i finished the game without knowing the tricks, I remember being down to my 11th and 12th guys casting life 2 and life 3 while relm was painting kefka... and somehow miraciulously finsihing the game

I was just about to post the same thing.
I am pretty sure I put those double trinkets on, that made you cast double and it made spells cast 1 mana?
And I just spammed Ultimas on Kefka and lost maybe 1 or 2 people.

there were so many rumors and lies about what you could do, saving Leo was just one of them. without the internet back then, you just couldn't figure out what was real or not.
raise your hand if you wore the Cursed Ring for 255 battles, trying to change it to a Paladin Ring

Just saying this now: if this list isn't topped with Baldur's Gate II, the entire process is flawed. Doubly so if Final Fantasy VII outranks Final Fantasy VI.

It wasn't even so much about the tricks - it was grinding your characters out in the Dinosaur forest.
I think I actually spent 15 hours grinding it out there - I know I got Edgar to level 99 and most of the party was high 90s. It was eventually just for fun if anything else.
You could also get your characters 10k exp by fighting the Caltrops (?) in the desert. They had 3 HP and you missed them a bunch of times, and when you hit, you did 1 damage.
I know with Sabin I avoided using Bum rush for the longest time, it did take a while to get the timing down, but eventually I mastered it.
I think the only trick I looked up online was the one to keep Shadow - hire him and then select "wait", then try to leave again and select, "Gotta wait for Shadow" when you are getting ready to jump off the floating continent right before the world ends.

BG2 is so epic. So pissed they haven't made a BG and just continued it with the NWN series (which is meh).
I actually loved the expansion pack as well, Throne of Bhaal, which turned your mages into super power awesomes casting 8th and 9th circle spells.

LOL. Paladin/cursed shield was awesome. Totally forgot about that.
I heard a rumour about doing X amount of battles or something stupid would get Leo to come back, I don't remember the exact rumour but I think a friend and I tried it for a bit then gave up.
If they ever re make that game again they should make Leo join you just to make everyone who played it before go WHAT THE WHAT

Totally think Fallout 1 will be in the top 10. Fallout 2 was just like add-on content where they fixed a lot of the interface issues from FO1. Still an amazing game, but it didn't have the same feel to it for me, but maybe that was just me.
As far as Deus Ex, did the new one really go back to the quality of the original? I've pretty much refused to consider it after playing the demo of Deus Ex 2 and seeing how much they had ruined that game.
Also, anyone think Arcanum will make the list?
Deus Ex 3 is a great game, but it doesn't really compare to the first one (nor is it an RPG)
The first time I played through Ogre Battle I didn't have the internet, and I still ended up with a lot of secret characters. Interesting fact: the pin for my debit card has always been a character from Ogre Battle.
Next time I played through I had game faqs and made a stacked team.. something about playing through without the guide makes it so much more fun though.
