The iPhone 4s was $149 on a 3 year contract last year when it came out. The Galaxy S3 was also $149 on a 3 year contract when it first came out this past summer. I would expect the iPhone 5 to also be in the $149 range.
I just wish that there was a place in Calgary where I could go and purchase a factory unlocked Galaxy S3 whenever I wanted. I have that option with Apple, but not with Samsung. That's too bad.

As someone who has owned an iPhone for 4 and a half years I am seriously considering jumping ship to another phone. I was already getting a little fatigued by the OS and it's not changing much. The hardware is almost unchanged and doesn't entice me to upgrade. I'm holding out hope for an iPad mini though.

This is kind of where I am too, after playing with my Nexus 7 iOS just feels a bit long in the tooth. Was hoping for something big in iOS6 but it's just more evolution.
Just don't want a piece of plywood a S3

I'm leaning toward the Lumia 920. I just have to do a bit more research on Windows Phone 8 and make sure I won't be missing anything important for my own use. That phone certainly doesn't solve your issue of not wanting a large phone though.

There's enough Android phones out that have a smaller screen though, I'm sure I could find one I would like.
Or just try the S3 and see if I get used to it.

These events are usually over by the time they bring out the band, right? Surprised there was no "one more thing" announcement for the iPad mini given all the rumours.

Yep that was pretty much what everybody was thinking. There's not too many places to go at this point aside from thickness, weight and battery. Pretty impressive it's 20% lighter and 18% thinner yet still has a better battery. To be 2x faster on many processing tasks is very impressive given how fast the 4S is. I love the wifi working on N as my home network isn't great on G, but all in I'm not seeing enough to desire an upgrade. I'll wait for the 5S.
The touch is super cool, but the pricing is a turn off. I don't understand where you fit a mini-iPad when the Touch is $300.

I think that's expected in October.
Though after seeing what they want for the new iPod Touch I'm not to excited about what the iPad will cost.

I might be the only person actually interested in this, but I am very curious to read some reviews about those new head phones. I've tried 3 or 4 different in ear canal buds and not liked them at all. Not comfortable and so much noise from the cables. I can and do use the Apple ear buds all day long. The sound is fine as I mostly listen to podcasts/audiobooks with it (have awesome headphones for music).

I actually have an iPhone 4 that was my personal phone that I switched out for my work phone and a Galaxy S3 that I recently purchased for personal use.
Both formats have their perks.
I like the open format of Android and think that Widgets are clearly the way to go. Having any information from sports scores, to email, to stocks readily available on the main page is extremely useful.
However the APP selection and simplicity of an iPhone is second to none. iPhone still has the best APP interface, and is the easiest device to use.
Honestly I think if you are looking for an easy device to use that still has the Apps to allow you to do more technical things go with the iPhone.
However if you feel you have outgrown the iOS and are looking for something a little more advanced that gives you a little more freedom with what you are doing with your phone then I would lean towards Android.
