I have my doubts that the current climate is open to it, but many (if not most) previous expansion teams played in temporary venues until their permanent arena was completed. Quebec has a venue that could fill that role, Seattle does as well but it's far from desirable.

I would be absolutely floored if the NHL announced any expansion teams this summer.

Ah ha, got Valo on paper saying the Seattle Center can host NHL games. Nice to see you've come around...(just joking).

I'll update the NHL in Seattle thread with some news but there will be no NHL in Seattle without the NBA at least in the SODO iteration.

Most likely it will be something like a relocated NBA franchise plays in the Seattle Center until the new building and, at that point, an NHL team would come via expansion.

Oh yeah no chance they announce anything this summer. Three reasons:

1) Expansion is a huge bargaining chip heading into the next CBA negotiations. Contraction might be too depending on how ugly it gets.

2) Any expansion will include a Toronto team and the ludicrous expansion fee that comes with it. Still quite a bit of work to do on that Toronto deal.

3) The League still needs the Coyotes hammer for now as they negotiate a new lease with Glendale. Who knows how much longer that will drag on or if it will ever be resolved. Between Toronto, Seattle and Quebec City, QC is the only one which could be ready for 2013-14.

I never said that it was incapable of hosting NHL games. I was quite clear in saying that it was incapable of being anything but a placeholder until a new arena was built, much like how you describe the NBA situation.

Absolutely. I agree that there are too many reasons why expansion will not happen this summer.

I think next summer might be more practical, assuming there is any expansion coming soon at all.

Quebec moves closer to the NHL, says Hamad

The legal defeat for Denis Belleval, who wanted to block the construction of a new Coliseum, Quebec closer to the National Hockey League, said Minister Hamad.

The Minister responsible for the Capital commented that the verdict "allows the region to move forward. The people of Quebec need an infrastructure, an amphitheater. "

This will reassure Does the NHL boss Gary Bettman? "Of course it will help. For us, the important thing now is meeting deadlines and costs, "a total bill that the mayor of Quebec Regis Labeaume solemnly set at $ 400 million.

Upgrading the Coliseum: tenders delayed (May 17/12)

March 19, City Council passed a $ 6.8 million to spend on renovations to make the Coliseum in line with current NHL.

Despite the tentative agreement occurred on May 7 to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, Regis Labeaume announced that the City did not change his plans and went ahead with the bidding. It will, he said, still time to cancel if the Coyotes are indeed in Arizona.

Amphitheater of Quebec: 30,000 shovels are for sale

http://translate.google.ca/translate...9.html&act=url

The mayor of Quebec, Mario Bédard, Mario Roy and Jerome Landry gave the kickoff this morning at the promotional campaign of the event "I have my shovel blue" to be held on September 3rd for the future amphitheater .

A march will also take place before the first shovel of dirt. The instigator of the Blue March, Mario Roy, specify the route later.

The family event will take place from noon to 17 pm.

The mayor took the opportunity to announce that the contract for the excavation, the site of the future amphitheater, will be awarded tomorrow. This is an important step in the construction of the building.

Another milestone reached

http://translate.google.ca/translate...9.html&act=url

"However, that's two or three years that we show to the NHL and I think they got the message. On September 3, we move to another stage. The construction of the new arena really begins. "

The instigator of the Blue March remembers also that the former NHL player Luc Robitaille, now president of corporate affairs for the Los Angeles Kings, had told him when he was in Quebec in April 2011.

"He had told me that the best message to send to the NHL, is to have concrete projects. We must put an excavator on the construction site and show all of America that we are really serious, "he said.

Moreover, despite all the twists in Glendale related to the purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes by Greg Jamison, President of the Nordic nation is realistic about the return of an NHL team in Quebec City for next season.

"We are already far in July. For now, the only thing we can do is respect the efforts of the League to keep a team in Arizona and cross our fingers that our luck may Sourisse, "he said

"We will be patient. We love hockey so much and we want our team so we'll wait as long as necessary. "

New arena: $ 13.5 million for "backhoe loaders"

http://translate.google.fr/translate...7_section_POS1

The company Raymond Boulevard is indeed the lowest bidder at $ 13.5 million. The other firms have offered their services are CRT Construction, Building and BSL EBC, the highest bidder at $ 17.1 million, reveals the electronic tendering.

The arrival of "backhoe loaders" on the site of the old racecourse is strong sense. It represents a tangible first step of the future amphitheater that sends an important signal to the authorities of the NHL, according to Régis Labeaume.

Former hockey greats attend Quebec City arena groundbreaking
PQ leader booed by many in crowd

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montre...-breaking.html

Tens of thousands of Quebec City residents, dressed in blue and wielding blue plastic shovels, turned out for a groundbreaking ceremony Monday to mark the start of construction of a $400M amphitheatre that they hope will one day become home to an NHL team.

Organizers sold 20,000 blue plastic shovels in the lead-up to Monday's event, to give every citizen who wanted one the chance — symbolically, at least — to help break the ground for the new arena.

The stars of the event were Peter Stastny and other four former players for the Quebec Nordiques, including Stasny's brother Marian.

Quebec City Ready to Start Digging for New Arena
http://thehockeywriters.com/quebec-c...for-new-arena/

The new arena is due to open in 2015 and will have a capacity of 18,000 spectators.

The arena will be similar in style to the Consol Energy Center, the home arena of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and will occupy approximately 64,000 square metres of space. A television studio for Quebecor, valued at approximately $40 million, will be constructed within the arena. On March 1, 2011 Quebecor purchased the naming rights and management of the arena.

The progress made in Quebec City seems to please top NHL officials, namely Gary Bettman and Bill Daly. “It is apparent that the overall reaction in Quebec City to Mayor Labeaume’s plan for a new arena is very positive,” said Commissioner Gary Bettman in an e-mail to the Journal de Quebec, a local newspaper. “We will watch the process with interest.”

Daly added that a new arena would go a long way in helping Quebec City securing an NHL team. “We are encouraged by the Mayor’s announcement on the new arena and we believe it will be a very good thing for the City of Quebec,” he confirmed. “While there are no guarantees that an NHL franchise can return, certainly a new arena will enhance those prospects significantly.”

So they've broke ground, but don't have a concept done up yet or a calculation of costs?
