beIN Sport is the Al Jazeera sports network. They outbid GolTV/Fox Soccer for La Liga, Serie A, and Ligue 1. They also outbid everyone else for all of the USMNT away qualifiers. It is rumored that they'll be big bidders for the EPL next time around.
They showed the USA/JAM match live, in English, at 6pm Mountain last night. You got some bad intel, sister...
Any footy fan worth their salt has DirecTV in the States, anyway. Many cable providers only have Fox Soccer, and some of those are only in SD. That's simply inhumane!

That's how soccer is. You saw the Panama #19 roll around on the ground like his head was shot off trying to get DeRo sent off. The refs in the region suck! They allow everything so you have to do it.
You're going to see absolutely ridiculous things on Tuesday in Panama City.
Some players on some teams dive and simulate, yes. But after the goal (which I have no problem with) Canada took it to another level. Even the captain took one of the worst dives I have ever seen. It was disgusting. After the bench incident I was almost hoping Panama would tie it.

Nah.
I've watched Canada get duped by these smaller, irrelevant countries for 20, 30 years now. Playing fair and being the good guy has gotten Canada where? Anywhere? When was the last time Canada won a significant match? 1993? We haven't been in the HEX since 1997.
Sure Canada still plays very hard and doesn't resort to outrageous tactics but once in awhile and especially for the final 15 minutes last night, Canada needed to give these cheats a taste of their own medicine. Last night's game was much too important to play nice.

Yes I have to agree... it's beyond diving with the Central American national teams, they would literally do anything to win and have no shame at all - it's OK to take the high road if the refereeing catches it, but calling the games are refs from other Central American nations and sometimes amateurs from the Caribbean who are among the worst in the world and are used to this behavior back home.
Canada needs to at least be wise to whats going on. Even being smart on the pitch can only take you so far when off the pitch, they do the whole throwing batteries, coins and bags of urine thing and some of the crap they pull at the teams hotel at night when Canada is visiting goes well beyond what we think is acceptable within NHL terms.
Not condoning the bench incident, but making sure you don't lash out at all against these teams and slowing the clock down when you get a lead are absolute minimums to compete. I have no problem with slowing the clock down against Central American teams. It's smart and until the refereeing in CONCACAF improves and the refs crack down on it you either play that game against some of the crappier countries or you basically give them a huge advantage.
You might have a moral victory at the end of it but a hockey mentality against the Honduras' of the world will get you 2 or 3 red cards and a 4-1 loss.

Is it because we 'play fair' or is it because some of these 'irrelevant countries' are better than us? Honduras and Costa Rica are consistently ahead of us in Fifa rankings.
Last World Cup we had a group of Mexico, Honduras and Jamaica and we couldn't even win a game. I don't think you can blame that all on refereeing and gamesmanship.
Also I don't think you can lump Panama in with the other 'irrelevant countries'.
Only recently have they become good, and I haven't noticed them use the same tactics as other Central american teams, and people aren't quite as passionate about soccer their as the countries to the north. I watched a couple of their games in the Gold Cup last year and I like them. I hope they make the World Cup.

I've heard these things when the Americans play in some countries that hate the USA (for various reasons). Never for Canada. I'm sure it happens, but I think some things get overblown. And again, Panama isn't Honduras or Costa Rica.

It's not a hockey mentality as there is plenty of diving and play-acting in hockey. That second half was one of the worst displays of sportsmanship I've seen, even counting Latin American and Continental Europe teams. Mckenna's dive was ridiculous. An embarrassment.

Here is a video a full two nights before the game taken by members of the Canadian team right outside their hotel ( I believe that's Milan Borjan in the video with the laser pointers getting shined on him), I'm thinking it will only ramp up over the next two days - also guessing there are no noise bylaws in Panama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1q_2...layer_embedded
and some more: http://blogs.canoe.ca/reds/
Kind of a poor showing actually... just seems like a small pack of unemployed bums drinking and hanging out. They're certainly trying though. Also, the grandma dancing in the crowd is pretty awesome.
It happens for everybody that plays away in CA in important WCQs, not just the USA or Mexico.

Another local supporter told the Sun that local fans usually reserve that kind of treatment for when the Americans visit Panama, but that an exception might be made following Canada’s impressive win over Panama last week...
Still, I'm surprised this happens in Panama (I think of it more as a baseball country), even if its only like 20 people. I suspect there wouldnt be a showing at all if it wasn't for the unsporting way Canada won.

Baseball was way bigger... Panama used to be whipping boys in CONCACAF. Then around the millenium they produced a really good crop of players and went on a run in WCQ for 2006. They didn't make it but I think that soccer has become way more popular since. Three or four years ago they invested quite alot of money rebuilding the national soccer stadium.
It's not at the level of hostility you'd see in Honduras/El Salvador/Guatemala/Costa Rica but it's getting there pretty quick. They used to be a walkover in the 90s on and off the pitch.
They usually only go a bit crazy for the US and Mexico type games because we have never made it this far in a meaningful position in the last 10 years since they got decent and their fanbase woke up.

So the actions of the opposition's fans and not the abilities, or lack thereof, of our players is the reason why Canada hasn't been in the HEX since '97? If the States wasn't qualifying with relative ease then your theory might hold some water. However, I think it is quite clear that the best way to beat these countries would be to ensure that we assemble teams with a sufficient amount of quality.
Basically, we need to elevate our game not bring it down to their level.

Definitely. Although I don't believe Canada's quality has been that poor. We do well in Gold Cups. Won it all in 2000, lost to the US in 2002 semis (got 3rd), lost to the US in the 2007 semifinals due to being robbed of a perfectly legit goal. Quarters in 2009 and 2011 losing 1-0 both times. If we are consistantly in the top 6 or top 8 in the Gold Cup, why can't we be just as consistant making the HEX? It's the same teams.
Because our home advantage in WCQ is nothing compared to the other teams home advantage. On paper, Canada has always been better. This is proven by neutral venue records. But our home is not as much a fortress as their home. I hope that BMO Field turns into that fortress. A difficult place to play. The United States has learned this. Their crowds are tougher and louder over the years. When they play Mexico, they play in places like Columbus or Kansas City.
I don't think we need to bring it down to their level, but a little of bit of cunnery and playing the ref never hurts.

BTW it's an El Salvador referee tomorrow night

So you're saying that if we had more world class players we'd do better? Well that's a shocker.
Te fact of the matter is that when you're not a superior opponent in terms of skill you need to take the advantages where you can, and you certainly don't allow your opponent to take advantage of situations while you let them pass by. If that means engaging in some gamesmanship that's exactly what should be done. Canadians seem so worried about being polite that they'd rather see their teams be made to look foolish than stand up for themselves.

Nope, that is a given fact. What I was saying is that we should focus on that fact rather than mimicking the antics of the opposition. For too long it seems as though the CSA and Canadian supporters are focusing on the wrong, and often sub, issues.

Not sure if you're talking about the fans actions or the play on the pitch but if it's the former, I don't think it's so much that Canadians are too polite, rather that Canadian's just don't care that much about the game to do some of the things the Panamanians are doing.
If this were a hockey game, damn rights we would disrupt the opposing team. Since it's soccer, no one is passionate enough to go to their hotel room in the middle of the night and start clanging around.

So the answer is that we should just get better players? Well yeah, that'd be great, but in the meantime we should probably do what it takes to win games. If that means we need to take advantage of the way games are officiated in this region we should be doing just that.

I'm talking about the players and coaches engaging in tactics that some people seem to decry despite the fact that our opponents get away with the same things to their advantage.
Anything that puts me in Rio de Janeiro in 2014 to watch our national team get killed 6-0 , with a smile on my face the entire 90 minutes, is ok by me.
In other news, I just went to try and buy a jersey from the soccer Canada site, and almost everything is out of stock. That seems like a good thermometer right there.

I wish I got one of the centennial jerseys before they ran out, those things were sweet.
You could try Kicks or Sport Chek in Market Mall too, although I wouldn't expect a huge selection. I got mine at Sport Chek last year surprisingly.

Here's the scene outside of Canada's hotel. Doesn't look so bad, actually it looks like an awesome time. Borjan (backup GK who is taking the picture with his cell) looks like he's enjoying it, which is good to see.
