I would bring Sven up to around an 80 (which was pretty mediocre still in NHL 12) and adjust his potential so that he could be more than a 4th line player. I did this with Brodie, Reinhart, Ferland, Brossoit, Irving... anyone who I'd consider among our top prospects. This way, I could eventually use them, instead of having them rot on the Heat.

I don't know if I was playing the wrong way, but even when I picked 1st overall, I couldn't get that player to be a good NHLer.

I don't know how much it's changed in this game, or again, if I've been doing it wrong all the time... but thee way the guy has described in the video, by tanking with your top prospects playing first line minutes... that doesn't seem authentic to me.

...

Can anyone tell me how developing prospects in the NHL compares to leaving them in the AHL?
In 12 I found that they had to be at least a B for them to hit the mid 80's and you had to have them on the 1st line for them to develop properly. When I was playing I would only look for B's the B-'s were pointless. With A's, you could easily get them to the mid 90's but it does take a few years. I believe with just tossing them in the NHL they do go up a bit faster but your team is gonna be awful for a few years lol. My guys when I played, I usually waited until they were at least an 80 before i brought them up to the NHL. But now that I'm thinking about it, I've had similar problems with bartschi. I think I got him to hit maybe 83.

Are there any improvements this year in the GM mode to how your unsigned prospects appear? I could never tell when they were going to be released to free agency if I didn't sign them. Like is it three years, two years...what? Do they make that more clear?

And in that flames GM video, he mentions that if you're a rebuilding team for example, it's best to put a guy like Sven on the first line to get him up to his potential the quickest. But if you're not rebuilding, can you still build a top prospect up by leaving them in junior and starting them in the minors?

played some more last night.

Really enjoying it thus far.

I feel like it's a million times easier to play defense, but also, to forecheck and generally be a solid 2 way player.

The key is essentially never skating full out.

In 12 I got Sven to a 87 at the end of his ELC, then signed him for 8 years, the next year he jumped to 91, when I traded the game in he was a solid 92

Yeah... how did you do that without editing him? If I'm not mistaken, he has B- potential in NHL 12.

Agree 100%.

I've found its easier to activate my defense into plays now over the previous NHL versions. So far this is a huge improvement over last years NHL.

I like the feature were you can rotate 3 A's instead of having a Captain. Iggy went down with an injury and it was nice to have 3 A's instead of replacing his C with someone. Just a nice touch IMO.

Injuries are still far too common in simulated GM mode.

I wasn't able to get Sven over 82 or so, but I did get Adam Larsson to 96 by his 8th or 9th season.

Flames GM mode part 2:

Trading seems much improved. Still though, I don't like many of their definitions. How are Iginla and Pronger not top line players? Why can't you succeed if you play them in their real life roles?

So indeed, I think some editing needs to be done.

Just as an experiment I started up a GM mode and it will let you trade Luongo for Marion Hossa straight up. Cue canuck fan hysterics.

EASHL is a bit of a pain this year, what with it starting you out at like 50 overall and barely giving you any points. I have a LW 2way at 58 now (rookie 1) and my RW PWF is 60, but they still move like their skates aren't so much skates as cement blocks.

Why are Kostopoulos and Ivanans still apart of the flames roster?

You have to download the roster update I believe. I don't think they bothered updating the rosters past a certain point in development. (They have a roster update out as of Sept. 4th)

I'm pretty sure they're there even with the update.

Probably not. KHL isn't included I think.

If so, you'd need to add him and Ramo.

Cervenka is on the Czech National team, but his stats are awful.

I upped his potential to a B, that's all I did. He got to an 80 after his final year of junior, then I put him on the 2nd line and he jumped 2 points his 1st year, 2 points his 2nd year, and 3 points his 3rd year. His fourth year he jumped 4 points which sucked cause it meant more money. Then I traded the game in in his 7th year and he was at a 92
