When I was in school in Toronto the student res. had shared laundry. I was getting friendly with a girl and one time when she had left her drying in the dryer I took it out and even folded it for her. It's too bad she left the six-pack of beer right in front of my door so I tripped over and smashed half of them later that evening.

What the hell kind of spider did I just kill? It's legs spanned a diameter of roughly 2.75-3 inches and the thing was red. I almost caught the vapors when I saw it. I'm in Calgary.

sort of related, probably belongs in the WRGMG thread, but last night i was sitting at the computer barefoot and felt something crawling up my foot. i immediately kick my leg out, look down but can't see anything. then out of the corner of my eye i see a spider roughly 1.5 inches in diameter skitter into a dark corner never to be seen again
i know the next attack isn't if, but when

Sounds consistant with the Giant House Spider; I've never seen one in person, but I've heard that they're gradually becoming more common in western north america.
edit: curse you for making me google pictures of spiders before going to bed.

Yeah that was it.
" With speeds clocked at 1.73 ft/s (0.53 m/s), the giant house spider held the Guinness Book of World Records for top spider speed until 1987 when it was displaced by sun spiders (solfugids) although the latter are not true spiders as they belong to a different order.[1]"
**** me.
So does that mean I probably have more of them crawling around in here?

For those who have done it, roughly what is the cost of having a dog put down? I imagine you go to a vet and hold your friend tightly while a needle is administered. What happens to the carcass?
We're not there yet but it's approaching. This will be a very hard thing to do to your little friend, and I'm very much dreading this. Any advice on that is appreciated.

I think it was 200 or so for us over a year ago.
They dealt with everything after. Really not interested in the "carcass" or what they do with it.
It really was unpleasant. I fully know that it was the right time and all that... but what a miserable day. The staff and the vet were great.
Unless you feel you must be there, maybe say your goodbyes at home or at a park; and have someone else do the clinical part. Maybe for some that last memory is unnecessary.

And ask them about the whole process...
What I mean is that after my wife had our cat put down a few years back, they decided to send an card with a tuft of his hair a few weeks later.
A nice gesture but she and my kids were starting to move on and then this...
Kinda brought everything back again...

That sounds like the worst idea ever. A tuft of hair they ripped out of your dead pet. Yeesh. It's amazing the brain farts people can have.

Actually, I had that same idea. A few years ago we made that offer for friends who were going through this with their dog. They have recently made the same offer to us and I think I'd take them up on it. It'd be easier to say goodbye at home and let them handle it from there. Thanks for the good advice.

I took my dog for a nice walk in the forest just before the end. Should have left that as the last memory.
However saying that it's better for someone else to do the deed; not sure if I could let them load my dog in their vehicle. Might just change my mind at the last, and take him myself.
Hopefully I have a decade at least before this comes up again.

I read something about the males going indoors in the fall to look for mates. So if you're lucky, this was just a single guy on the prowl.

Or they mated and soon your house will be filled with hundreds of baby spiders. Enjoy.

Personally, I can't imagine not being there with my dog at the end. When it was time, I took him for a long walk, gave him his fill of all the foods he liked, and then went to the vet.
I sat beside him on the bench, he put his head on my arms, we looked into each others eyes, I told him everything was all-right and it was time to rest. He relaxed, sighed, closed his eyes and gently went to sleep.
Yes, it was the hardest thing I have done in my life, but I wouldn't trade those last moments for anything. Being there at the end knowing he went peacefully gave me a real sense of closure and peace.
my condolences

Where would one buy used, or cheap, Karaoke CDs/DVDs?
Not for me, my singing could fell a man at 30 paces.

Does your singing also kill spiders?

Tramps if you're looking for used?
I've seen cheap karaoke CDs at Walmart and the Dirty Tiger.

Thanks. Forgot all about Tramps, didn't know they were still around.
Hate to ask what a "Dirty Tiger" is?
