LCD Computer Monitor : What's good?
My computer monitor finally gave out after months on life support. Looking for a good 17" or 19" LCD. Looking for something thats good for viewing digital photos, some graphics work, TV and DVD's, but mostly just everyday computer use. What is good? reliable? bang for the buck? Where should I buy from?
I quick glance at the Memory Express site and I found this BenQ 19" monitor for $340.
http://www.memoryexpress.com/index.p...uctID=5970&SID=
or these 17" monitors from BenQ or Samsung for $300

Comments or recomendations?
Oops, sorry thought I was in the OT forum. Mod please move.

Just an FYI- Telus has a deal right now if you switch to them for internet, you get a free LCD monitor. 19" Dell IIRC.
Almost enough to make me switch over from Shaw.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks amazing, but $550 is a lot more than I want to spend, with RRSP season just gone by and income taxes coming up. I'm willing to spend my Ralph bucks (prefereably less)

If you do a lot of graphic intensive stuff on your computer such as video or gaming, then make sure that you buy yourself a fast lcd monitor. The newest ones are down to 2ms. Here is a 3ms 19" LCD manufactured by Viewsonic that they sell at tiger direct:

If you are doing graphic intensive stuff and don't buy a fast monitor, you will be VERY disappointed with your monitor. There is a reason why they always display these monitors with the fish tank screensaver. The fish move real slow, so it doesn't show the limitations of the slow lcd monitors. Trust me, if you want to play NHL2006, or watch movies you want a fast monitor. If you don't want to worry about whether the monitor will keep up speed wise, then stick with a CRT. They have some really cheap CRT's at tiger direct.

Photon is right. Dude, you're gettin a dell.
The LCD's go on sale one day every time they have the 10 days of deals (I guess it's 12 days now, go figure).
I've got the 24" widescreen and I love it.

We own a Benq 19" LCD and also the Samsung 19", both are good, just get a monitor with short repsonse time, and high contrast ratio.

There are two 19" Dell monitors for $340
1905FP and 1907FP. Is there a significant difference between the two?
The first has 800:1 contrast ratio and 20ms reponse time
the second is 700:1 and 8ms.

I've got a BenQ FP937s and I love it. Puts my 17" CRT to shame. But I suppose almost any LCD would do that, so who knows.

I'm also curious about something like this. My sister is moving to Ottawa and going to be tight for space. She'll need to buy a new TV and a new computer. Is there a way to do both with regards to the monitor. I know all about TV tuners etc. As I have a lot of experience with those. But monitors, no idea.
Can an LCD TV work well as a computer monitor, or an LCD monitor making a good TV?
Thanks!!

Not easily- meaning not directly from the satellite receiver to the monitor.
Even if you have a satellite receiver that has DVI output- TV DVI is different than computer DVI. Why is that you ask? Just to fata with you.

My Dell 20" has composite and SVideo inputs so hooking it up to a satellite receiver is simple. If the monitor only has DVI and VGA then it is probably more difficult.
Today they have the 20" on for $499 and the 24" for $849

Between the 1905P and 1907P the 1907P has a much lower response time which is important if you play games or watch movies on it. Though I don't really like these super fast ones now because they are mostly 6 bit panels rather than 8 bit panels (ie they display far fewer colours). The 20" Dell is an 8 bit panel with a 12ms response and I have no problems with games on it (and I've returned LCD monitors in the past because I couldn't play games on them). The panel in the 20" Dell is the same as the one in the 20" Apple Cinema.
My only other advice would be whatever you get, get it from somewhere where you can return it! That way if you don't like it you aren't stuck with something you don't like.

I have the 24" that Photon mentions (it is sweet). It has 5 connections for different types of video input, so you should be able to find and adapter to get at least one of them to work. (there is a picture of the 2405 connections here SVideo, Composite, Component, DVI-D, D-Sub)
And for the people recommending the 20" Apple Cinema Widescreen; the actual panel used is made by LG.Phillips and is also used in the Dell 2005FPW.

That's great news guys! I didn't know some Dell LCD's had those extra inputs.
I may have to abuse technology and put one of these in the bathroom!
