Well this is nice to see.

Maybe Google got the hint after watching what happened to Samsung last week, but CNET has confirmed that the CEOs of Apple and Google have held at least one conversation in a bid to resolve the myriad intellectual property and patent disputes between the companies.

Not that I think Apple is a big threat to stock Android, but it would be better for all of us if they worked out the issues and focused on competing with each other to offer a better product.

Apple and Google reportedly in talks regarding patents:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...2F+Top+News%29

Just as I predicted back on page 8

It's comical to me that both companies basically threw Samsung on the fire to see how it burns, and now they will most likely establish a truce or some cross-licensing agreements between themselves. It makes me wonder if Google sees Samsung as a partner or a competitor (I guess now we know..)

Samsung made a pretty big splash with their Windows 8 device yesterday so technically they are a competitor too as much as they might be a partner.

Pretty sure the don't. I believe it's the other way around. Microsoft paid Nokia something like a Billion dollars for the privilege of being the only smartphone OS on Nokia's phones. Apparently Motorola was considering a similar deal before Google bought them.

Samsung still have cards up their sleeves

Quote:
According to the Korean Times Samsung holds just over 10% of all 4G LTE (long term evolution) patents and is prepared to play some offense of their own in the courtroom. What we are now hearing is that Samsung is basically saying “We dare you” to release a 4G LTE iPhone — which is rumored to be a part of the next iPhone launch

How would that be any different than the 4G LTE iPad they've already released?

Not to mention Apple has more LTE patents than anyone else, if I'm not mistaken. They won the bidding war for all of Nortel's LTE patents a year ago (as part of a group with Microsoft, Sony and RIM), and now hold the majority of the crucial ones for the technology.

Gotta love the missinformation from the Korean press when it comes to defending their Korean manufacturers.

While the last lawsuit there may have been some merit based a lot of similarities on the Galaxy S generation, the Galaxy SIII generation Samsung tried to differentiate as much as possible and Apple is still trying to sue for an injunction instead of trying to negotiate.

Some of these patents are as general as hell. "System and method performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data". That's like something I had to do in first year programming. Apple is suing for the following patents in case anyone is still following this:
Patent #5946647 - System and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data (Data collector/detector)
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5946647.html
Patent #5946647 - Unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image (Slide to unlock)
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8046721.html
Patent #8074172 - Method, system, and graphical user interface for providing word recommendations (Word recommendations, I guess auto correct)
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8074172.html
Patent #8086604 - Universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system (universal search bar on a phone)
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/8086604.html

All of these really bug me since they've been implemented for years and years elsewhere. (i.e. Windows XP and windows 7 search and address bars) but they tacked on exclusive use on the phone onto a patent. Now they're suing for injunctions for all of them and it sounds like something they could go after all mobile devices for, including stock Android for some of tehse. I don't see how they are suing for universal search when Samsung removed from the SGSIII preemptively when Apple was granted the patent in the first place.

Wow, today I learned I can probably be sued by Apple for programming I've done over the last 6 years at work. WTF? How did they patent this?

I dont know a thing about patents, so im just wondering, if these patents are so general and ridiculous, how did they get them in the first place?

I thought patents were really hard to get?

Thor posted a video on how the patent system in the US got so bad. Basically case law allowing software patents that are vague.
http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpos...7&postcount=53

The flaws in the patent system lead currently lead to "presumption of validity" because of a few factors including patent officers being overloaded.

The eight Samsung smartphones Apple wants a U.S. judge to ban after winning its patent case might symbolize all that Steve Jobs hated about the Android competition. But according to a new report, the iPhone by one measure has already trounced the allegedly infringing handsets, ban or no ban.

Advertising analytics firm Chitika measured a week’s worth of U.S. mobile web traffic generated by the iPhone versus the eight contested Samsung phones — hundreds of millions of impressions in all, according to the company. The result: iPhones drove eight times the mobile web usage of all eight Samsung models combined. Or to put another way, iPhones accounted for 88 percent of all web traffic analyzed, versus 11 percent generated in total by all the phones targeted by Apple. (The Epic 4G was the next-highest single-model traffic generator at 4 percent).

.....

With none of these (Samsung) phones being recent releases, it is unlikely that such a ban, or a lack thereof, would have a significant effect on Samsung or Apple market share or momentum. Samsung is close to, or has already, released several new, non-patent infringing flagship phones, and the upcoming release of the iPhone 5 will excite both new and old Apple customers, along with pushing the price of older models slightly lower.

.....

In other words, Apple has already so far surpassed the targeted Samsung phones in terms of user engagement that pulling them from shelves won’t lead to more iPhones or fewer Samsung handsets sold. In that light, Apple’s strategy looks mostly symbolic: Don’t mess with us, or we won’t stop until we’ve destroyed you. After all, in thermonuclear war, the endgame isn’t compromise; it’s annihilation.

Just goes to show who the bully here is.

Good thing for Apple that patents/courts don't measure how well such features are implemented. We all know how people hate Apple's auto-correct for its hilarious mistakes.

A panel of three judges in Tokyo found that Samsung's smartphones and a tablet computer didn't infringe on Apple's patent for synchronizing music and video data with servers, according to Bloomberg. The court also refused Apple's request to ban Samsung from selling eight models of Galaxy products in Japan.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple was ordered to pay the costs of the lawsuit, Bloomberg said.

Most of those autocorrects are fake as hell. It doesn't correct into words like vagina and curse words.
