The world needs oil so I approve this move.

Why will there "eventually" be a spill there? Serious question as I'm not familiar with the regularity of oil spills in the ocean aside from the recent big one.

one of my areas at work is the arctic actually. When I look at the map, looks to me like there's been about 30 or so wells, just in this one little small area.

I actually quite like ducks. I don't think energy production's goal is to kill the duck, however. Sometimes it happens, it would appear. But nowhere close to the magnitude of hunting.

I'm not sure I get the argument from environmentalists about tailings ponds impact on ducks and birds, when hunters go out and shoot them in far greater numbers. Do environmentalist's go after hunters with such piss and vinegar?

I am not saying ignore the environmental harm the oilsands create, but I don't get why the focus would be there vs. hunters when the hunters kill them at a far more rapid rate is all.

Seriously, though. Are they going to go extinct because we drill for oil in their backyard? Grizzlies haven't. I know, terrible comparison, but I do wonder why we're so hung up on the idea of certain species going extinct. Millions of species went extinct before we decided to burn their remains to propel our vehicles. We better start burning a few more if we ever expect to break out of this one planet solar system.

I wouldn't say we're damaging the planet per se. The planet will remain and as the wise Dr. Ian Malcom said "...life will find a way." We're damaging ourselves, the current ecosystem and future generations though. That's not an excuse, I'm just arguing semantics.

However. What are we going to do about it? I don't like that we have to use oil, but the fact is we do. We don't have a viable alternative yet, and the idea that oil companies are stifling progress in that department is absurd. Don't you think if there were alternatives to oil that it would be those companies in the front of the line to capitalize on them? Until we can find a cheap substitute for petroleum-based plastics and lubricants, then we'll remain dependent on oil.

It's great to yell at these companies to stop drilling. But then what? Ok so we stop extracting oil, what's the next step? All of these companies do massive research into retreiving their product efficiently and cleanly. You can see evidence of that just by watching how rigs run now vs 20 years ago.

What I guess I'm trying to say is, your concerns are valid but you come across as just another person yelling at the clouds.
