How does that work? Are they allowed to just jump up to the ATP whenever they're ready? Do they need to go "pro" and take a paycheque? Do they have to qualify?

I'm not 100% sure.. I think you can jump back and forth betwen pros and junior. For example Eugenie Bouchard has made $68000 in her career WTA tournaments but still can play junior so I don't know.
I think with Bouchard's current run, she could have asked for a wildcard into qualifying for the Women's draw but decided instead to play in the juniors.
She's ranked in the top 200 now but that was after the US Open cutoff. I read that after juniors here she's "turning pro" to play the Fall Asian tour.

I'm still wiping my tears. Goodbye Kim What a class act. The tour won't be the same without her.

She is a great role model for young athletes. I loved her US Open win a couple years back when she made Serena cry.

I remember that match vividly!
The commentators were saying how everyone agrees that no one has ever treated the umpires and ballboys/ballgirls with as much respect as Kim. One of a kind and so genuine.
Milos is in action this afternoon. We'll see if he can rebound after those struggles in the first round.

Milos is looking good, up a break in the second set. Now that Tsonga is out, Murray is really the only beast left in Milos' whole quarter section.

Roddick just announced his retirement. I wasn't expecting that. The US Open is his last tournament.

Blake just crushed #24 Granollers and will be Milos' next opponent in Round 3.
Blake-Raonic could be the night match on Saturday.

Yeah Milos!
Hopefully he can take care of Blake. Whatever happend to Blake? He seemed to dissapear right around the time that Fed's game dipped too.

I asked same question a couple months ago. He was never that good but because he was American he was provided the extra hype treatment like Donald Young gets

I think he slowed down, while the game sped up and he couldn't adapt his style. I'm actually surprised that Blake hasn't retired yet because he's older than Roddick and Fish. Blake has always faired well at the US Open, especially with the momentum of J-Block. It's hard to forget his epic night match with Agassi on Centre Court (QF? SF? I can't remember) not long after his dad passed away. If you have a chance to read Blake's autobiography, I recommend it. His battle with the neck injury and shingles is eye-opening.

Boy this is one dangerous match against Blake, especially if it's played at Armstrong or even Ashe. Blake always fares well when he has crowd energy, and he just dominated Granollers easily. I still think Milos will win but it could be a 5-setter.

Blake at one point was ranked #4. He was pretty darn good, known for his speed and power. Donald Young has now lost 17 or 18 matches in a row. They're completely different.
Of course, like anyone else that peaked during 2004-2007, he was probably mentally crushed by having to face a player like Federer. I sometimes think we judge that era so harshly (players like Roddick, Blake, Safin, Davydenko, Nalbandian etc.), but I guess it'd be mentally draining for anyone to play at a level that makes you basically one of the 10 best players in the world, yet never even come close to winning.
