Any other day of the week, Pizza Bob's on Kensington just west of Crowchild also makes a nice wood fired thin crust with decent traditional ingredients.

Is that the old Tom's location? If so, is the pizza similar or the same as Toms?

Well, they bought the old Tom's and kept the oven. I prefer Pizza Bobs over Tom's though. I like the crust and sauce better, and it seems they use good quality ingredients in general too. Unless you like very lightly sauced pizza, I'd order extra though. I wouldn't rate it as good as our new local Neapolitan joints, but it's still quite good.

If you like Italian style pizza, Famoso in McKenzie Towne just opened a month or two ago and it's awesome! It's the closest thing I've found in Calgary to true Italian pizza:

It seems the previous owner of that pizza shop (under a different name), ran the business into the ground, and not sure if people know there is a completely different pizza shop there now.

Anyway if you live in the SW, give this shop a try, I've been eating at varsity pizza for 20 years (OMG I can't believe that's true), and I really would like to see these guys do well, just genuine nice guys...and awesome pizza.

I find since the new owners took over it's not as good as the old owners (Jim). The crust is often soggy. Still decent valuet though.

You just ruined my day.
Hopefully the salad dressing hasn't changed.

What are some suggestions for specialty pizzas?
I'm a huge fan of pizza with unique toppings. Sammy's has a pretty good selection and despite the fact that they're a chain, Panago has some pretty tasty ones too.
Chicken Fajita at Sammy's on their thin curst is great. I used to deliver for them when I was in school and I got them to make me a "suicide" pizza and it was amazing. Pretty spicy but it didn't just burn your tounge and ruin your day... It still had a lot of good flavor.

In no particular order:
Michael's on 10th. The "Michael's Special" is amazing.
Matador
Famoso
Greco's (West 17th Ave)
Without Papers
I've heard great things about El Cintro, or whatever it's called but haven't been there. Also, Pucinello or ella
I like Double Zero but don't think it would make my top 10 in Calgary

Matador is in Varsity near Planet Organic. New management, but menu seems exactly the same. Good, but salty pizza.

I find the best pizzas in Calgary are made by Asian families cooking Greek-style pizza. It's a cultural smörgåsbord!

Il Centro is awesome. So authentic. I know the family pretty well and there is something to be said for focusing on your 1 establishment and keeping it "real" vs looking to branch out and open places all over the city.
Famosa is high on the list for me as well. I find Pulcinellas is going down hill over the last couple of years. The bottom of the pizza used to be charred and solid. Now it seems soggy and doesn't hold up very well.

Do you mean Matadors is by Planets Organics?
On a more serious note, I am surprised that it has new owners. What are the subtle changes that they have made?

Is Matadors next to Safeways?
Had one of the top pizzas I've had in Calgary Cibo.

Go from 3 to 5 and you get a steal of a deal.
Probably my ranking for Calgary would be for actual pizza, not pizza loaf that Calgary is known for.
1. Il Centro
2. http://cibocalgary.com/
3. http://ldvpizzabar.com/

Went to Cibo on Sunday and it was a fantastic meal. We had a pizza and a pasta dish and both were great. The food and the atmosphere were top notch. They did a great job with the place.
Pretty reasonably priced for a place like that on 17th too.

Nicks delivers in the NW, but I think it is much better in the restaurant. The delivered pizza I ordered, had a real soggy crust by the time it got to me.
Gus's pizza by Foothills Hospital is recommended, but I have not tried it:
