The fact that a society dedicated to the opposition of circumcision took a negative view to the AAP study finding the practice to have more benefits than risks is hardly surprising.

I'm surprised there wasn't reference to "legitimate HIV infections".

Cutting off a piece of dick from a baby. What a world.

I hate ear infections - let's chop my ears off (gotta dig out the pesky little parts on the inside too).

Pink eye sucks - might as well have my eyes plucked out.

Stomach ache? There's a sure-fire cure for that.

Circumcision is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater - or perhaps just a portion of the baby's penis.

The AAP is the same organization that endorsed female genital mutilation two years ago. That one didn't go over so well:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/07/he...cuts.html?_r=1

Quote:
Georganne Chapin, executive director of an advocacy group called Intact America, said she was “astonished that a group of intelligent people did not see the utter slippery slope that we put physicians on” with the new policy statement. “How much blood will parents be satisfied with?”

She added: “There are countries in the world that allow wife beating, slavery and child abuse, but we don’t allow people to practice those customs in this country. We don’t let people have slavery a little bit because they’re going to do it anyway, or beat their wives a little bit because they’re going to do it anyway.”

The "intactivists" obviously have strong beliefs about this, though, and I'm not sure their commentary is 100% accurate. Mothering.com (I'm laughing a little referring to this very mom-centric natural/attachment parenting site on CP but whatevs) has a response that I prefer a bit, though I won't link to it as there's a graphic image at the top and I don't want to freak anyone out - but it's currently on their main page.

Anyhow, I am honestly surprised by the announcement but I think it's important to note they don't go so far as to actually recommend the procedure. I think the take away is that there can be some health advantages to circumcision in some cases - but there is still no overwhelming evidence as to which is better from a public policy perspective. And we'll see what the Canadian Pediatric Society recommends in future too.

For the record, my two boys aren't circumcised and I am still very comfortable with that decision based on the evidence. We won't circumcise any future boys either. But I know that some families prefer it and that's fine.

As a woman, I will say that other women do sometimes make comments about uncut guys. However, that's an entirely cultural/perception thing, and as the majority are not circumcised, I think that may change. It's also not a comment you hear a lot or anything and is generally not a concern assuming the guy is keeping things clean.

The fact that you characterize AAP's position as set out in the linked article as endorsing female genital mutilation says you can't discuss this issue rationally.

Honestly, a lot of women don't have a clue. A lot of girls only think a guy is unmutilated if they have excess foreskin. Newsflash - many guys who are intact do not have excess foreskin.

It's interesting that when you start looking at the studies they use as sources for the actual comparison of rates of HIV vs circumcision you come across a lot of South Africa, Kenya, Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa etc.

I wonder how exactly they conducted this study?

Do they find a woman who has Aids and try to set her up with as many men as possible to see how she gives it to? Do they make this into a prime time television show and tell the guy when he is on stage that he might have Aids?

HaHA, maybe, but there are good reasons to be skeptical of the AAP's conclusions.

Here is an article favoring circumcision from 2010, with a lengthy debate following:

Only thing for me about circumcision:

It removes nerve endings which I enjoy, so no, I would not cut my kids extra skin off.

Personally, I just don't see how the rewards outweigh the risks anymore. If one of your major arguments is 'well some girls don't like it' then you've clearly lost the high ground.

Circumcised or not, if your buck naked with a woman and have trouble sealing the deal because... you have much bigger issues to deal with.

Woah, I must be grossly misinformed about the procedure....

When I got it done to me when I was 4 or 5, I was put under. I don't really remember much but I was definitely put under before they started anything.

I guess I was a rare case though cause mine was done for medical reasons... At least thats what I was told...
