I think my justification was something along the lines of freedom of expression allows me to say what I'd like. Don't like it? Ignore it.... Good for him having the balls to talk about how much he loves guns. But unless he's in a pro-gun forum, then everything we talk here is fair game. Like he has the right to post this thread, we have the right to be ridiculous in it.

Obligatory grow a sense of humour remark.

Crown Land that hasn't been designated for any other use as far as I know. Sibald Flats also has a public outdoor range that you can go do some "plinking". I implore you though, carry out what you take in and clean up your spent casings!

What are the regulations surrounding carrying a firearm in your vehicle? I've always been curious. I've seen a lot of deer that have been hit by vehicles, and I always thought if someone had a gun in their car it would save a lot of suffering.

I had a buddy that bludgeoned a deer to death after it was hit to try and put it out of its misery. That's a terrible way to die.

That it is. So lets try not and derail a thread that seems likely to be derailed anyways.

Well I thought it was funny, and you do have an ignore feature you can choose to use.

If it's just a rifle (or shotgun), keep it out of sight. Perfectly legal. I'd have to consult my manual but I don't believe it even has to be trigger locked. Just locked in the car and out of sight.

Restricted firearms (Hand Guns, Assault Rifles) are a totally different demon. They MUST be trigger locked or disabled, and stored inside a locked container. Can only be transported to and from a certified range on a reasonably direct route.

One thing my instructor told us during my course that I found a little surprising is he said you are well within your rights to sling a rifle over your shoulder and hop on the C-Train. Probably not going to end well for you but legal.

I suppose you could carry a firearm (ie. rifle) as long as it was concealed, empty, and had a trigger lock on it... not 100% positive on this though.

Discharging it along a highway or roadway would be another kettle of fish though. THAT would get you into trouble with the law.

P.S. I once tried to kill a injured deer (hit by a car) with a hunting knife which I carry in my jeep. That didn't go well. I think it caused a lot more stress and pain in the deer than if I hadn't tried to do anything... and I didn't even get a chance to stab it. Just my getting close caused the deer to thrash about violently, causing it further pain (it had a broken leg and a head injury).
It died on its own a few minutes later, thank god.

Will the government throw me in prison if I don't get a PAL and they find out I am a gun owner?
Unfortunately, yes you would be. A lot of the firearms "paperwork" crimes are built into the criminal code of Canada, resulting in major charges if your PAL lapses. There is a question on the PAL application on whether you already have firearms (I believe this was a carry over from the ability to upgrade from a POL to a PAL). Simple answer, just go get your PAL, and then dig out your rifles. FAC's used to be for life, I'm surprised you weren't automatically rolled into a POL (similar to what used to happen when PAL's expired with no renewal processed). As to whether they would throw you in jail, worst case scenario, yes they would. You would be considered in unauthorized possion of firearms, which is criminal code...They'd also take them, but its unlikely they would just do so quietly....

I'm highly interested in starting to hunt. I have no guns, permits, or hunting licenses.

1. How much am I looking for start up costs? (The cost for the paperwork and a solid new gun)
2. If I applied for permits/licenses today, how soon could I be hunting?
3. What rifle would you recommend? I don't want a "solid beginner" gun. 30-6?

You can legally shoot any non restricted firearm on any private land with permission of the owner, barring municipal discharge bylaws, and paying attention to the distance rules (200yds from any roadway, occupied building, etc). You can also do the same on any crown land (plenty off forestry roads). For those two options, pick a decent backstop, hillside, etc. There is also an open to the public range out of town called "Homestead Range". Its government operated/club maintained, its not bad mid week or so-so weather, can be busy and full of tools weekends and hot days. They have a rifle range, and a shotgun "pit" basically. Clean up after yourself!

Careful shooting at trees, they have the potential to ricochet, or alter a bullet path. Considering the dangerous range of many rifles is up to 2km, that could cause you some problems

I love shooting, going to the range was the favourite part of being in the army, handguns, rifles, GPMG, .50 cal, anti-tank rockets, hell I shot them all and loved it. However, I support gun control, mainly due to the few guns owners that are not responsible (unfortunately, those exist). I would love to be able to shoot again on a regular basis, however, that would mean a slackening of gun laws, which I don't want.

Aleks, has had the balls to open this thread to have a dialogue about firearms, good for him. If you don't like firearms, then either don't come into the thread.
Thanks for the support...

What about the gun laws prevents you from shooting right now? We have pretty strong gun control in Canada right now...If you enjoy it, don't worry what others think and get out and have fun!

Great question! And the RCMP was prepared by providing a nice little printable PDF http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/f...ntreposage.pdf. I generally keep this with me at all times, as officers may or may not be familiar with current transport regs. This way I can show them, and we can be on our merry way without incident.

Transport of non restricted firearms is quite lax. Unloaded is all it needs to be! Restricted firearms are obviously more strict, requiring an authorization to transport, trigger lock, and locked container out of sight.

I've been in that same scenario you outline, had to wait for RCMP to come put down a deer I had struck.....Unfortunately I can't say with any certainty that you would not be in some sort of trouble for putting down an injured animal? Its a pretty big grey area against most discharge regulations.....I hate seeing animals suffer aswell

So I can transport an unrestricted firearm as long as it is unloaded? Does it have to be out of sight? As a kid I remember seeing trucks with a gun rack in the cab, and guns on them. I haven't seen that in years, so I'm wondering if it's now illegal.
