Default Info please! Old Calgary Herald Building at 7th AVE and 1st Street being demolished

Does anyoine know any information regarding this? I work in Bow Valley Square overlooking the site and and I'm trying (in vain) to find some information on wehat is going to be built in place of what is currently there.

Thanks,

Herald Square developed by Brookfield. There is a rendering in the SSP Development Listing thread, but that is an old design. No rendering publicly available for the new design, but the rumor is that it will be 2 towers, one of which may be Calgary's new tallest.

I am so hoping for a building to finally break over 800', a very RARE chance we see something real tall. However with our red hot leasing market downtown and only two buildings currently under construction (Eighth Avenue Place West and City Centre) we may just get something really sweet on the Herald block site.

That's probably the best site for a new tallest building in Calgary; given its prime location business wise, and fact it can definitely add a few feet to the Bow's height and not shadow the Bow (river).
If there's ever been a building that needs to be torn down, its that one.

I think the development permit still lists it at around 730 feet. Could change, but I think it will be unlikely to see anything taller than the Bow go up in that spot.

Edit: Wasn't aware nothing has been resubmitted since the Bow Parkade purchase closed, so I retract all. 1000ft! Let's see it!

You never know, they might be able to do a Jenga build on it.

It was a beautiful building back in the day, too bad they pretty much destroyed that facade pictured when they slapped concrete slabs on it in the '60's.

From what I know, the Bow Parkade next to it is coming down too. That entire block is being converted into a two-tower development, one of which might be taller than the Bow.

I believe Dialog is the architeture firm in charge of this bad boy.

If this building ever had any heritage value, it is long gone through terrible renovation and marble recladding.

Billy's moved a block east a couple of months ago. You can still wait for the train there, since it's on the new platform.

I remember seeing pictures from back in the day of the building when it was first built, and it was quite nice (sandstone, etc), and would have fit in very well in that block, across from the Theatre. Quite amazing to see how disgusting they made it with all the marble.

Any progress on 7th Ave is good progress. What a dump. The Tim Hortons in Scotia centre is like a whos-who of the mental illness and drug industries.

Edit: just reread my post at home an realized that I must have the images blocked at work, as someone clearly already posted pics of the old building.

Dialog is the local - a UK firm is the lead designer now.

Whatever they build, it will only be a 20 minute commute from airdrie.
