What is with the credit card machine in the picture with the wounded African American? Do they need to swipe the card before he gets treated?

I am not sure you can train for that circumstance - it isn't easy shooting a gun especially when you trying to protect yourself. It's too bad people were hit but that is entirely the fault of the man who wiped out the gun in the first place and shot his co worker.

That part of town has a ton of wholesalers, so my guess it either belonged to that guy or one of the others in the photo.

And no, you don't have to pay before you get emergency care. They'll be considerate and give you the bill after you're taken care of.

Do they seriously do that?

EDIT: They are at least legally obligated to provide life saving treatment/procedures, right?

That's considerate of them. You won't have to pay before you get care so you don't die, but they'll take your house to get their money.

Off topic, but man do I ever love Canada. Can't imagine being in the shoes of the person dying of cancer and them having to worry about what's going to happen to their loved ones after they die and the hospital bills come in.

God bless Canada.

What does a medical bill even look like? Is it similar to a car repair bill?

Seal gunshot wound - $4,400
Dress wound - $560
Antibiotics - $340
Shop Supplies - $299
Total - $5,599
* Use your frequent customer rewards card to earn free medical attention!!

Yeah, I always wondered that, too! I'd be interested to know.

It's against the law for a hospital to not give you treatment because you can't pay.

Basically.

When we had our second child, we packed a bag with Kleenex, pain reliever, etc. so we wouldn't repeat the $30 Kleenex and $70 Tylenol charges that we had with our first child.

Well, you don't pay AT the hospital, they're kind enough to mail the bill to you. Full amount due upon receipt, of course.

Hmm... I went to the emergency room and did not have my insurance card. Just so happened I changed wallets and did not put all of my cards in that morning. They told me to go to another hospital....I told them to call Blue Cross. When my insurance was verified they admitted me. Triage thought I coud have a staph infection, so yes it was serious. False alarm fortunately.
That's not the first time that happened. So I really don't understand how illegal aliens manage to get treated. I'm sure the situation is different if you're bleeding to death. And yes, in one case it was a for-profit hospital. And yes, I had to give them my VIsa card ;(

umm, bull####. that's EXACTLY what police are trained to do. they go through years of ongoing firearms training that specifically instruct them how to control their emotions and make sure they hit the bad guy and not an innocent bystander. either these cops are at fault for forgetting that training and shooting their gun like an idiot gang member, or the department is at fault for not providing the proper training to these idiots. i hope every one of those injured victims sues the city for all they can get

They are trained properly, but in the middle of a shoot out its unreasonable to expect every bullet to me exactly where they want it to be.

easier said than done and you know nothing about police training.

sue? can't say i disagree, seems like a reasonable and intelligent thing to do - hope they have enough cash to cover everyone's legal expenses.

Not it sure is good that only trained officers can carry guns eh? Keep in mind that I put more rounds through my pistols in one session then 95% of officers will in 2-3 years of their mandatory 'training'...It's evidenced in scenarios like this. Condolences to all the victims and families. 1 CCW permit holder could have ended it immediately

Late edit: Jim Carrey is a wad....this has nothing to do with the second amendment

So the solution to a bunch of people getting hit by stray bullets is to introduce more people with guns into the scenario? Makes sense.

You're quite right on the first point: handguns, particularly in dynamic situations, are wildly inaccurate. That's exactly why police officers are trained to shoot center mass, and why "live shooter" training courses advise that if someone (other than a cop obviously) points a handgun at you and tells you to "freeze" the best thing you can do is move and move quickly - it's very hard to hit a moving target with a handgun even at reasonably close distances and with training.

I wouldn't expect big legal awards in a case like this - more likely payment of people's medical and related expenses. This isn't a case where a judge or jury could easily conclude there was some police negligence - what else were they supposed to do but shoot the guy? The fact that they missed a couple of times is no indicator of negligence, and it's not a situation where the trier of fact would be unsympathetic to the police cause.

Basically it was just a crappy situation all around.
