According to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, the Red Sox are talking to the Dodgers about a deal that would send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles.

Yeah Rubby De La Rosa of the Dodgers was apparently optioned to AAA today so that he could be a player to be named later in the block buster deal. Otherwise the Jays were looking to claim him to block the deal.
Looks like the Red Sox really want to reset that club house by moving out Gonzalez, Beckett, and Crawford.

Good article explaining how this works.
Basically, there are two trade deadlines during the season. The first, which is July 31, is known as the nonwaiver deadline. Players traded before the July 31 deadline can be dealt without qualification or additional hurdle — i.e., they don't have to pass through waivers first.
After July 31, however, players must pass through waivers before being traded. After Aug. 31, players who are traded (after passing through waivers, of course) cannot be on any postseason roster. By extension, players traded before Aug. 31 are eligible for postseason play. Because of the waiver thing, most big trades tend do go down before the July 31 deadline, but August also has seen its share of blockbusters.

Ah thanks.
And Mariners just came back from being down 7-3 in the top of the 9th to take a 8-7 lead. Is this team unbelievable or what?

Mariners end up losing 9-8 in the bottom of the 9th. Too bad. Great comeback though.

Colour me shocked at the apparent Boston deal. I really don't know about this De La Rosa pitcher (apparently a legit top rotation guy), but with him coming off TJ surgery, how can he be the centerpiece in a deal where 3 not-so-past-their-prime MVP's are being sent the other way? I know salaries blah blah blah, but the optics of sending 3 possible great players for one guy who has about the same chance as them of reaching stardom once again, seems really odd. Sure if it's a salary dump you'd expect a Crawford for him, one for one, but to send the other two, I'm shocked that the trade could be allowed.

Yeah, strange deal.
Isn't like $300 million dollars worth of salary going from Boston to LA?
Crazy.

271 with the Dodgers paying 260 of it. The only salary of note going the other way would be Loney, and his contract is up after this year.

I don't get this deal. Sure the soxs are having a bad year but why blow up your team. They could hold onto them and reload next year.

I can understand moving Beckett, and to a lesser extent Crawford. I don't understand why they would trade Gonzalez. I guess like SylvanFan said, total reset.

Just puzzling that they signed Gonzalez to a huge contract and deal him in his first year of it. ESPN is saying that the Dodgers are agreeing to take on the contracts of Crawford and Beckett in order to acquire the slugging first baseman.
I don't understand baseball deals like this. You would have to think that Gonzalez would be a player you rebuild around.

I'm so confused. I don't know what to think of the deal. I'll miss Gonzalez a lot, but its so much salary leaving.
I don't even...
This is why I drink...

I wonder if the Red Sox looked at teams like the Cardinals and Brewers and how their offences have kept producing without their big first baseman. They likely felt it was worth losing Gonzalez to shed 5 years of Crawfords injury risk contract. Not to mention two years of complaining to the owner about different things.
Ultimately they shed the back end of three lucrative long term contracts handed out by the previous GM. They have gained a lot of financial flexibility to go forward. Fact is the ticket demand at Fenway is so great that a couple years of a lower payroll team with lesser expectations won't impact their revenues.

^ Sylvanfan, I'm with you on that. It's a good deal by Boston to get out from lofty contracts, but the problem I have with it, is it's lopsided for 2 opposite reasons.
Boston is doing it to shed 3 massive contracts. LA is taking on 3 massive contracts.
Boston is getting nothing in return. LA is giving up almost nothing.
It's not a baseball deal - it's buying of contracts. How can baseball allow this type of thing to proceed? Boston screwed themselves by taking chances on great players at the time, but failed when 2 of the 3 bombed with injuries. They shouldn't be allowed to escape with such a non-baseball deal like this. There should have been some value coming Boston's way, but there's nothing - shows how baseball deals are structured now.
