If this thing was 2 blocks away and wasn't something that happened a few weeks after the Batman shooting, chances are you probably wouldn't even hear about it in Calgary. It's the ESB connection and timing that is making it a big headline.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I was more concerned about an air conditioner falling on my head than I was about random shootings in Manhattan. Considering the sheer amount of people there, I'm surprised this kind of stuff doesn't happen more.

Apparently 19 people were shot last night in Chicago.

I wonder why that isn't gettting as much attention?

I'm sure most do simply commit suicide. The problem is you've got a nation of 300 million and many of them have lost hope. Jobs, dreams are both being lost with little hope of ever returning. People are angry.

Actually it doesn't at all, this was a targeted act.

I would think a gunman offing his boss and then shooting 9 other random people on a city street in New York would always be heard about in Calgary, regardless of timing.

Yeah, just to clarify, I meant the part where he went nuts after and shot 9 other random people.

193 people were murdered in the first 6 months of 2012 in NY. You guys better give me your tickets right now. It's just not safe out there.

Because Chicago is in the midst of a ridiculously bloody summer of gang shootings, and most people don't have any ability to relate to a gang shooting or life in that environement so the stories don't grab the general public. Most people can relate to office building life, or going to a movie etc. so those stories make the news.

If I was to guess, it sounds like gang/drug related shootings. Also, it wasn't a mass shooting of 19 people, it was 19 people shot in various shootings throughout the city last night.

Really? I mean that sincerely (not trying to be snaky), as you live there, so you'd know. But is this kind of thing common and something we don't hear about up here? (Again, not just the targeted shooting of the boss, but the mass shooting of bystanders after).

A little too early to make judgements about his intent. Those people could've been shot during a confrontation with the cops (and it sounds like the cops were responsible for a couple hits).

This guy was some nutbag for sure, but believe me, if someone wanted to go stand in front of ESB and start shooting people, you'd be able to get in way more than a handful if you really wanted. That place is packed.

I guess we'll see what happens as more news comes out. I'm just leery of everyone turning this into a Batman sequel.

That doesn't appear to be what happened:

Quote:
After shooting the 41-year-old former co-worker, Johnson fled eastbound on West 33rd Street, and walked northbound on 5th Avenue with a 45 caliber hand gun in a black bag under his arm. Kelly said: "A construction worker who followed him from 33rd Street alerted two uniformed police offers who were posted at the 5th Avenue subway entrance. Police officers approached, and Johnson pulled the pistol from his bag and fired on officers. They returned fire, killing him." Bloomberg said there was video that clearly shows "the guy has the gun out and tried to kill the police officers."

Not common, but stories of 4-5 people shot aren't exactly uncommon. It typically doesn't happen in Manhattan outside of a building that everyone knows though, and that's what moves it to the front page of the Calgary Herald. If this happened outside a garment factory in Queens you'd have never heard a word about it.

Oh, if that's what happened then I retract my statements. I was just going off the speculation in this thread.
