Discovery Ridge/Elbow Valley City Council VOte
Anyone know anything about a City Council vote on Sept 10th - apparently voting to amend this area of the city development plan. There'll be stuff like 4 more entrances to Discovery Ridge (now only 1) and a neighbourhood built south of Griffiths Woods (which I thought was Reserve land?!?).
First I heard of it was tonight.

Where would 4 more entrances go? Weird.
Solve Glenmore eastbound traffic, by routing them through Discovery?
Make Glenmore/#8 wider would make more sense.

Where are they going to be 4 more entrances to Discovery Ridge? I could see a 2nd further down Highway 8. There isn't a need for 5 entrances.

Read through a planning commision report dated June 12 2012. Said there were two meetings for the public one in may 2010 and the other may 2012.
Report says the feedback was mostly negative.
Also states that an enviromental report said that a bridge over the Elbow near 101 for a second access would have negative effects.
But at the end, the report suggests that council approve the developers plan for more housing on the west end of Discovery.
Will try to link that here.

I think nothing is possible until an overpass is built at 69th and Glenmore (#8), and the road twinned. At least that's what I get from the planning maps.
Will await someone smarter than me to read it and comment.

One exit into Discovery is a pain during first snow storm (usually takes at least 1/2 hours to just exit the neighbourhood). I wouldn't mind having another exit at west side of Discovery Blvd to ease the congestion during am/pm rush hour. Adding 4 extra exits sound excessive to me and I would mind any further housing development.

They need to lay down spike belts for the effers who use the Disco Ridge turnabout to avoid having to get in the left hand turn lane from 69th onto HWY 8. Once they start, it's a constant stream and no one can get out. It's to the point that I just barge in let them honk and scream. Monkeys.

I do the same thing. I just pull straight in, eff them. When they fill the roundabout on a snow or ice day, then the school buses start sliding down the hill. Fun fun fun.

Found this as well, Aenas. Clear as mud to me.
Some stuff has now come to my attention after further investigation:
- No wonder the MD (Rockyview) turned down the road to this development going through Elbow Valley, a councillor for the MD lives in Elbow Valley.
The development is in the MD; the MD said no way is that traffic going down her road.
*So the City of Calgary is going to pay to build a bridge, a road, and entrances to DR, while the development and taxes get paid to the MD. Nice!!!
Guess which one is opposed: http://www.rockyview.ca/Default.aspx?tabid=272 (council of MD)
- Oh and the 2 open houses they had on this - 1 in May 2010 - 50 people showed up. In May of 2012 another one (both in Elbow Valley) and 15 people showed up! 15 people! You think City council would want to ensure those potentially affected would at least have some idea of what's coming. A resident in the community said he saw a sign about the open house. He went and nothing was going on. He called the council and was told the info on the sign was incorrect.
Civilized corruption at its finest.

This info has spread through our little valley like...like rising flood waters on a flood plain...wait.
Anyway, have a flurry of emails from neighbours and friends. The common thread is who knew about the meetings, I didn't see any notices. Etc.
So now I can sit back and watch them attack.

Good to hear - Aeneas - there is also a Facebook group - Discovery Ridge Community Association - lots of momentum there but not a great deal of members. Check it out.

Not really a facebook kind of guy.
Most of the people I talked to are all upset, but if I read that report, and looked at the drawings correctly; for there to be another entrance, first Glenmore must be a freeway (which I assume to mean 4 lanes, two each way) and there must be an interchange at Glenmore and 69th st.
Curious to see how Pootmans votes.

Why? I can't even get into the turn lane to turn east bound on highway 8. I have to go across and into discovery to go eastbound. Unless the city fixes how traffic moves, cars will continue moving into discovery.
I also didn't realize that neighborhood owns the roads. Interesting.

As per an email from Alderman Pootmans, it is all a misunderstanding with a mistake in the wording of the document.
He clearly states there is no intention of a second entrance to Discovery.

The main reason we did not buy in Discovery Ridge was because of the one and only entrance to the community. Quick question, how do you get to Signal Hill shopping centre? I really hope you take the highways and do not cut through Signal Hill.

Most of the time I do. The thing is, it's not that it's just a few people making it a bit more difficult to get out. It literally shuts down all methods of exit from Disco Ridge causing huge back ups. Apples and Oranges. There are a whole mess of traffic related improvements that need to be completed to deal with the huge increase in the volume of traffic. In the mean time, I would like to be able to exit my neighborhood before 10 AM when snow is lightly falling. Not too much to ask.
