Chief Chiniki Restaurant Burns Down Overnight
A landmark on highway 1, some of my earliest road trip memories with my family were driving by it on the way to holidays or coming back to Calgary.
Apparently the fire started this morning at 12:45, 3 fire crews responded and no one was hurt.

I never did eat there, but was always curious about how it was. Did you? How was it?

Oh man, that sucks. I mean I never went there and only remember the sign as well, but it was definitely one of those landmarks that were part of the routine back from the mountains.

Nooooooooo!
I actually had breakfast there once.
It was pretty good.
That was about 8 years ago, so I guess I won't really be missing anything, but it still makes me sad for some reason.

That place was always on my list of places to eat, but sadly I never seemed to get around to it. Just like everyone else I ever mentioned it to! Hopefully nobody was hurt and that the place was insured.

Its downfall was the fact it was less than 1hr from Calgary, too soon to eat for those heading out of town, and too close to home for those returning.
Oh, and the fire

I had lunch there a few times when I did some work for the reserve. It was forgettable; the best part of the place was the sign on the highway. That being said, it still sucks for the people that work there and the owners.

That's probably why it burned down at midnight on a weekday . . . . nobody stopped. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge . . . . )
I, for one, actually did stop there. The Restaurant parking lot was the end point for my 16 km leg running in the Banff/Calgary Relay in about 2004. Too tired to sample the menu though.

As a kid, whenever we drove past that sign I always thought we were in Chicago Blackhawks country.

My European relatives and friends would always want to stop there, because they are fascinated by native culture. They will be sorry to hear about this.

My brother-in-law's parents stopped in there once. Immediately realizing that it was a native restaurant and that they are racist, they walked out after ordering drinks.

I too have fond memories of passing by and seeing the restaurant from the highway, but unlike those saying they always thought about stopping there I would think "Hmm I wonder who actually stops and eats there? Anyone?" and then I'd continue on my way.

As one of the few who has actually eaten there I can attest to the fact that local sales of Pepto Bismol and Imodium will be the ones really taking it on the chin(iki).

I feel everyone's stories of passing it and not eating there would be a reason this place was burned down.

One time, say at least 20 years ago we got a flat on the REDVAN while heading out to Kelowna for vacation. That's my contribution to the memories.

People actually ate there? The closest I got to that place was the gas station and that was sketchy enough. Always figured eating there would be like tossing the dice.
When I was a kid, I always figured everything out of that place would taste like beef jerkey.

We have stopped there for a bite a few times in the distant past. It was always nice to see the locals employed in the venture. It seemed to be a great location, and sorry to see it go.
