Default Moving a rifle from Canada to the United States

My grandfather recently passed away and left a Rifle (Winchester) to me. It's very old and I have no intention to fire it in the future.

What would I need to do to legally transport/ship it to Arizona? I assume the firing mechanism would need to be removed?

It's tough to find info online so my hope is that someone else may have done this.

This probably won't be a big help but...

My brother in law used to run a custom long gun company in Montana, and I recall him transporting all his stuff from Alberta by completely disassembling them and carrying them in 2 separate loads. Something about one part not being able to be transported with the rest.

I assume the rules are similar coming from the US to Canada,

Just walk it across the border on your shoulder. You're allowed to have guns in the US, in fact I think its encouraged.

The border guys should see you coming carrying your gun proudly and be all like;

"Look at that guy and the way he carries his gun, hes definitely an American, no need to even check his passport, just wave him right on through. And then give him some ammo, hes gonna love ammo....."

OR you could sell it to me I'd love a pic if you have one handy. Is it a lever action perchance? What calibre?

^^^^ ditto. More info needed. I love old firearms. I used to have a pre-64 model 70 Winchester that I really liked... or at least used to like til it got stolen in a house break-in.

P.S. I suspect you won't get near the grief going through US Customs, that you would if you were bringing it into Canada and having to pass thru Cdn Customs.

There isn't a ton I want as far as firearms go but a real, old school lever action cowboy rifle would be right up my alley. It would look very nice underneath my 1946 Lee Enfield No4(T).

You MAY have to hire the services of a firearm importer to do this legally. I haven't done much looking into transporting an unrestricted across the border into the States but as a Canadian, if I wanted to buy one in the States I would need someone with a licence to import firearms to get it. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if this was true for Americans too.

TONS of info in this sight regarding transportation legalities. You will need to sign up though.

Sorry about your grandfather.

Does it have sentimental value to you? Do you know roughly how old it is?

Thank you. Appreciate it.

It's very sentimental. It was made pre-1960. Winchester Model 94 30-30

My apologies, I shoiuld have started with that. I am sorry for you loss. Any reason he left it to you specifically?

That's a beautiful rifle you have inherited there. Very nice indeed. I know you don't intend to shoot it but would strongly recommend you take it to someone who knows what they are doing to have it cleaned and oiled before putting it into long term storage. Doing so will prevent rust from claiming it, even in a dry state like Phoenix.

You never know, one day you may want to put some rounds down range and taking care of it now will be of great benefit.

There's really nothing more badass than an old lever-action carbine; wicked gun, a perfect wall trophy for a man-cave (safetied of course).

Phone the US border customs and ask. If you were going hunting or to a marksman competition there would be no problem. If you reside in the USA and don't have citizenship you might have to get a criminal check from the FBI.
