^ when i used to cycle to and from work on the pathway i used to think those retractable leashes where a hazard to the dog.
if fido was about 20 feet ahead of the owner and i come cycling up behind the owner and the dog, i can pass the owner and then have the dog cross over the pathway and i am then possibly cutting over the length of leash between fido and the owner.
dangerous for everyone.

Maybe their should be a retractable leash registry or something.

Was just walking the dog through the park and was thinking about those leashes. They should be banned. Too many people use them poorly giving the dog a radius that's beyond the control of the owner.

There is no structure to the walk with those stupid leashes. The dog just wonders wherever it wants, and the owner has no control over it. I hate those things!

It has nothing to do with the leash and everything to do with the owner. We walk our 80lb Lab on those leashes and I love them. She can wander around and be a dog without me having constantly rope in the extra leash. If there is someone coming I pull her back and "lock" in the leash so she's right at my side. If a cat pops out you "lock" it in again and its instant brakes.
Idiot owners = idiot dogs.

You are by far not the standard when it comes to dog owners and those leashes . It was a generalized statement because the vast majority of people who use those leashes don't control there dog. No matter what if your dog is on a 20ft even 10ft lead you have limited control over him. A brake only does so much when he still has 20 ft to run around on haha. I'm not saying your dogs run around crazy but...you know what i'm getting at.

Finally going to step out of my lurking bubble for this one.
First off, you cleverly disguised this thread to be a serious discussion about dog attacks, but the more i read into, and seeing all your posts regarding dogs, it just seems like you found a news article about dog attacks, got a huge smile on your face, and thought "This is awesome, i'm gonna post this on CP so people can share my hatred of dogs with me!"
We get it, you don't like them. I bet there could have been many other things in the news you could've started a thread about, or how its not just dog attacks, but crime rates have increased as well. But of course, what caught your attention was the article putting negative looks on canines.
I'm not even going to try and change your viewpoint on them, I'm just going to feel sorry for you since you force yourself to hate such loving animals, and put such tremendous effort trying to make them look evil on an internet forum.

This is what I don't comprehend about people who own dangerous breeds like Pitbulls. They understand that other people around them do not appreciate being in close proximity to a dog that has the potential to seriously maim if not KILL them - and yet they continue to buy and use these kinds of dogs as family pets.
There is no campaign to make pitbulls look evil - they seem to do a pretty decent job of earning and maintaining their reputation themselves. What else do you expect from a breed that was meant to kill other dogs in fighting pits?
If you own a pitbull, you are the proud owner of a dog that everyone else around you is uncomfortable with. Way to be the person everyone else wants out of their neighborhood.
I personally LOVE dogs. But being someone who likes dogs I recognize that there are some dogs that are not meant to be family pets.

The reality is dog attacks can be very dangerous as evidenced by numerous recent examples in our area, including this horrific one from a couple days ago.
Why, in your opinion, is this not worth talking about? If you want to have a conversation about crime statistics in general you are more than welcome to start a thread on that. The article Bigtime linked to discusses how a young woman has been brutally maimed and is laying in a hospital bed just minutes from all our homes and you have the gall to accuse me of blowing this issue out of proportion? Give me a break.
Talking about dog attacks is not taboo and I have kept to facts (with citations) in this thread. Your denial of the legitimacy of this issue and attempts to undermine the validity of concerns about dog attacks does a disservice to the victims and illuminates your disinterest in an honest discussion.

I never once said that dog attacks weren't an issue, no need to put words in my mouth. I just said that reading all your other replies in other threads that have to do with dogs(which were quite a few, despite you not liking them) made me realize you have this deep hatred for them. When a thread about dog attacks is started by a guy like this, it makes me question the purpose. My opinion only however, obviously you don't see yourself that way.

Good response, but my post was about dogs in general and not pitbulls. And I understand pitbulls are dangerous, but some of them aren't. My family friends own one and it behaves just like any other dog, I don't think it deserves to be put down just cause it looks mean and was meant for fighting. Like how certain breeds of animals are killers, like tigers, lions, etc, yet they can be trained to not hurt a fly. And in attacks, the lack of owner responsibility has to do with it too, not just for pits, but for all dogs.

I still don't get your point (if there is one). Who else would start this thread? Somebody who doesn't have an opinion one way or the other on the issue? Quite unlikely. Troutman posts about music a lot...does that mean your skeptical about his opinion on music or motives for discussing it?
Anyway, it's always good to have more posters here and I'm glad you're not lurking anymore. This issue we are not likely to agree on, but hopefully you stick around as there is always lots to talk about.

We will have to disagree then. When I was 4 years old I was attacked by a dog; I think the breed was a great dane but my memory isn't that great. The injuries were so bad I was hospitalized. At a young age like that, I've had a phobia towards dogs and feared them ever since. Not too long ago, the family friends I mentioned in my last post moved closer to us, and we visited their house often. Eventually I became friends and actually started to like their pet, which was a pitbull. Also, I currently have neighbours that own a great dane, the same breed that attacked me.
I used to be so scared of dogs and detest them but I can see it's not their fault. The owner usually reflects on the attitude of the dog, and the one that attacked me did indeed have a crappy owner. I just don't like this thread particularily since it makes dogs look like such bad creatures. I myself was a victim of a dog attack, and here I am defending them.

tell that to Siegfried and Roy. fact is, no matter how you train certain breeds of animals, they can still become aggressive and attack. pitbulls were bred for one thing, to kill, and it doesn't matter how long you've had one or how well you've trained it, it only takes one instant for something to go wrong and someone gets hurt. there are reasons that laws exist prohibiting having animals like lions, tigers, etc as pets, and pitbulls should be added to that list

If thats how you feel then so be it. Last time i checked pitbulls weren't the only dog attackers out there. Pitbulls may have been 'bred' to kill, but that has certainly changed and the pitbull owned by our friends is friendly enough for me. Not to turn this into a religious debacle, but I doubt anyone can prove God created pitbulls to attack humans or kill others. As you said, they were bred to do it, that doesn't mean all of them can't be normal house pets. I'd be outraged if our family friends were forced to lose their dog just cause pitbulls were bred for wrong purposes in the past.

As a pit bull owner it's unfortunate to hear the continued negative stories about the breed. I still though think it comes down to the owners not the breed. With the right owner and environment they are great dogs. If raised the wrong way they can be a menage to both humans and other dogs.
We've had no issues on our end. Our dog is great with our kids and around other dogs. It's well documented that the breed is great with kids and no exception on our end.
2 things though we do avoid is 1) off leash dog parks and 2) bringing other dogs into our home (aka into her territory). As responsible dog owners we would never want to put our dog into an unfair situation where she had to react.
